Magnetic Field Effect on Coagulation Treatment of Wastewater Using Magnetite Rice Starch and Aluminium Sulfate

Nomthandazo Precious Sibiya et al.

Summary: Improving the coagulation process using nanotechnology with a magnetic field has been found to be useful for quick recoverability and reducing health and environmental risks associated with synthetic coagulants in water and wastewater treatment. In this study, magnetite rice starch (MS) and aluminum sulfate (alum) were utilized as low-cost coagulants, showing more than 65% contaminants removal (turbidity and TSS) and 30% COD removal using alum, while MS exhibited better performance with 80% contaminants removal (turbidity and TSS) and 50% COD removal. Moreover, the use of MS together with MF resulted in over 3% increase in contaminants removal (COD, turbidity, and TSS).

Hongbin Li et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the various aspects of biofouling in PA RO membranes, including its causes, theories, and mechanisms. It also summarizes the development and trends of membrane cleaning and different RO pretreatment technologies. The progress in antifouling surface construction and comparison of antibiofouling modification strategies are discussed. The challenges, technical issues, and future research directions in mitigating RO membrane biofouling are highlighted.

Effectiveness and mechanisms of electromagnetic field on reverse osmosis membrane scaling control during brackish groundwater desalination

Wenbin Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that EMF was effective in controlling membrane scaling in RO systems, improving system performance under typical operating conditions. It significantly reduced membrane scaling, changed the nature of formed scales, and decreased the rate of decline in water permeability. Additionally, EMF treatment effectively removed pre-formed scales in pipelines and tanks, but had limited efficacy on pre-formed scales on RO membranes.

Surface characterization of end-of-life reverse osmosis membranes from a full-scale advanced water reuse facility: Combined role of bioorganic materials and silicon on chemically irreversible fouling

Bilal Abada et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively characterizes the impact of co-existing foulants on the performance decline and recovery of eight-year-old reverse osmosis membranes. Silicon and bioorganic foulants were identified as the main causes of fouling. Chemical cleaning methods did not fully restore membrane permeability, indicating the need for membrane replacement. The study suggests that incorporating silicon pretreatment can improve reverse osmosis performance and extend membrane lifespan in municipal potable reuse.

Reverse osmosis membrane biofouling: causes, consequences and countermeasures

Eric M. Hoek et al.

Summary: Biofouling is a major challenge in reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology due to the chlorine intolerance of polyamide RO membranes. It increases the operating cost and reduces the useful life of RO membranes. Understanding the biofilm formation process, implementing effective pretreatment, and monitoring biofouling are key to preventing and recovering from biofouling.

Removal characteristics of dissolved organic matter and membrane fouling in ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membrane combined processes treating the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant

Jianwei Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the UF + RO process effectively removes DOM, with UF removing high molecular weight DOM and RO removing low molecular weight DOM, but also leading to membrane fouling. The most significant removal rate was observed for fulvic acid and protein-like substances.
