Treatment of controlled discharge leachate by coagulation-flocculation: influence of operational conditions

Khaled Djeffal et al.

Summary: The study aimed to optimize the operational conditions of coagulation-flocculation process for leachate clarification, testing different coagulants and agitation methods. pH adjustment was crucial for treatment success, with a significant reduction in turbidity achieved by adjusting coagulant dosage, stirring speed, and time. Bacteriological analysis showed differences in microbial content depending on the coagulant used. Additionally, ultrasound waves improved leachate treatment efficiency compared to mechanical agitation, resulting in optimal clarification at specific temperatures and BOD5 levels for different coagulants.

Physical-chemical pre-treatment of sanitary landfill raw leachate by direct ascending filtration

Fabio Rohers et al.

Summary: Several environmental problems in Brazil are caused by accelerated urban and industrial growth, resulting in a variety of urban waste. Landfill waste disposal is still common practice in Brazil. This study proposes an alternative method of physical-chemical treatment using sand filters and activated carbon columns for landfill leachate, showing significant reductions in COD, BOD5, ammonia, and color. The use of activated carbon columns demonstrated excellent performance in removing heavy metals, with limitations found in the length of filtration races.

Treatment of landfill leachate with different techniques: an overview

Amin Mojiri et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate is characterized by high chemical and biological oxygen demand, containing undesirable substances such as organic and inorganic contaminants. Different treatments including biological methods like bioreactors, bioremediation, and physicochemical approaches like advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, and membrane filtration have been investigated for treating landfill leachate. Combined treatment techniques have shown good performance in removing pollutants such as ammonia, nitrogen, suspended solids, turbidity, and metals from landfill leachate.

New insights into co-treatment of mature landfill leachate with municipal sewage via integrated partial nitrification, Anammox and denitratation

Fangzhai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study applied Partial Nitrification-Anammox/denitratation (PNAD) process to co-treat mature landfill leachate with municipal sewage for 300 days, achieving satisfactory effluent quality with Anammox and denitrification contributing to main nitrogen removal efficiency. The study also confirmed that nitrate generated during the process could be reduced to nitrite and reused, highlighting the potential for sustainable nitrogen removal.

Ammonium removal from landfill fresh leachate using zeolite as adsorbent

Shole Mosanefi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of natural zeolite on removing ammonium ions from landfill fresh leachate, optimizing the parameters of pH, contact time, and zeolite concentration. The results showed that the optimal conditions for removal occurred at pH 7, ZC of 80 g/L, and CT of 30 min. Langmuir isotherm was more consistent for adsorption than Freundlich isotherm, indicating clinoptilolite zeolite as a potential adsorbent for removing ammonium ions from leachate solution.

Recent Advances on Coagulation-Based Treatment of Wastewater: Transition from Chemical to Natural Coagulant

Muhammad Burhanuddin Bahrodin et al.

Summary: The use of conventional chemical coagulants in treating wastewater has raised concerns due to the negative impacts on human health and the environment. Transitioning to natural coagulants has been suggested as a strategy to mitigate these drawbacks, with research showing comparable or even better performance. However, further research is needed to address key aspects such as active coagulant agents, extraction, and optimization for different wastewater characteristics in order to fully realize the potential of natural coagulants for sustainable wastewater treatment.
