Aquatic and human health risk assessment of Humanogenic Emerging Contaminants (HECs), Phthalate Esters from the Indian Rivers

Arun Elaiyaraja et al.

Summary: The study investigates the spatio-temporal trends of 16 phthalate esters (PEs) in rivers of southern India and assesses their environmental health risks. It found that the Kaveri River had the highest PEs contamination, especially during the dry season. The health risk of PEs to humans from river water and fish was negligible, but some risk was posed to aquatic organisms. Specific PEs may pose risks to certain river fish species.

Insights Into the Prevalence and Impacts of Phthalate Esters in Aquatic Ecosystems

N. D. Baloyi et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters (PEs) are widely used synthetic organic chemicals known for their environmental pollution and devastating effects on living organisms and humans. They enter water systems through direct or indirect pathways, with advancements in instrumentation and methodologies improving the ability to measure trace levels of PEs in aquatic ecosystems.

Exposure and tiered ecological risk assessment of phthalate esters in the surface water of Poyang Lake, China

Shunhao Ai et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely produced and used in China as endocrine disruptors, with a significant amount entering aquatic systems annually. A study in Poyang Lake found that concentrations of PAEs nearly doubled in the dry season compared to the wet season, with DBP and DEHP being the most abundant congeners. The ecological risk assessment revealed that while DEP and BBP posed no risk in the lake, DBP had a potential risk and DEHP had an unacceptable risk that requires further action.

Hazards of phthalates (PAEs) exposure: A review of aquatic animal toxicology studies

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Phthalates are commonly used in plastic products and can enter the environment, leading to potential toxicity in aquatic animals. Exposure to Phthalates can activate detoxification and endocrine systems in aquatic animals, causing oxidative stress and metabolic disorders. In addition, combined pollution of Phthalates with other chemicals may result in altered toxicity effects in different directions.

Investigation of distribution, sources and flux of perfluorinated compounds in major southern Indian rivers and their risk assessment

Krishna Kumar Selvaraj et al.

Summary: PFC concentrations were investigated in three major rivers in southern India, with perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid being the most detected congener. Higher levels of PFCs were observed in summer compared to post-monsoon season, mainly due to decreased river flow. Domestic and commercial wastewater were identified as the major sources, and most detected PFCs share a common migration source.

Biodegradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals benzyl butyl phthalate and dimethyl phthalate by Bacillus marisflavi RR014

R. Kaur et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the degradation potential of BBP and DMP by Bacillus marisflavi RR014 isolated from tap water, and to optimize the degradation process using response surface methodology. The results showed that the bacterium can degrade both phthalates under varying environmental conditions, and the degradation rate increases with pH, temperature, and salt concentration.

Construction of hypercrosslinked polymers for high-performance solid phase microextraction of phthalate esters from water samples

Jinqiu Li et al.

Summary: Novel coatings for the extraction of phthalate esters (PAEs) were developed using three hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) constructed in this study. The optimized SPME method showed low detection limits and good repeatability for the determination of eight PAEs in water samples, with satisfactory recoveries achieved. This approach provides a promising alternative for monitoring trace levels of PAEs in water samples.

Paromita Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds in water samples from the River Ganga and Sundarban wetland, with potential ecotoxicological risks for fish and potential impacts on human health. The sites with sewer outfalls in the middle stretch of the River Ganga were identified as potential hotspots for further monitoring and intervention.

Seasonal Occurrences and Risk Assessment of Phthalate Esters in Sediment, Water and Biota of Two Sub-Saharan Rivers

Germaine Akinola Ogunwole et al.

Summary: The study investigated the seasonal occurrence of phthalate esters in sediment, water, and biota in two freshwater bodies in Nigeria and evaluated their ecological risks to aquatic organisms. DBP, DEHP, and dimethyl phthalate were found to be present year-round, with DBP being the most prevalent and having the potential to bioaccumulate in fish tissues. Results showed that DBP and DEHP posed a high risk to algae, invertebrates, and fish populations in both freshwater bodies, highlighting the need for comprehensive monitoring campaigns in areas with high anthropogenic activities to prevent deterioration of aquatic life.
