Sustainable water resource management through conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water: a review

Ranjeet Sabale et al.

Summary: The global population is rising dramatically, presenting a critical issue in meeting the demands for infrastructure, food, and water resources. The declining quality and quantity of water resources due to overuse, climate change, and population growth necessitate the intermediate intervention of conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater. This study reviews the literature on the benefits and capabilities of conjunctive water use for sustainable development, including conservation of water resources, alleviation of secondary soil salination and waterlogging, and increased crop production.

Hydrogeochemical evolution and assessment of groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation purposes in the Gushegu Municipality and some parts of East Mamprusi District, Ghana

Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari et al.

Summary: The groundwater resources in the Gushegu Municipality and the East Mamprusi District in Ghana are suitable for drinking in most areas, but there are localized contaminations that make some areas unsuitable for drinking. The groundwater is not suitable for irrigation due to high sodium, magnesium, and sodium adsorption ratio values.

Spatial variability of the physicochemical properties of acidic soils along an altitudinal gradient in Colombia

Juan Manuel Trujillo-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The main purpose of this study conducted in Colombia was to identify the role of covariates that influence soil properties under different land uses by analyzing the dynamics of selected soil properties. The results showed that altitude and land use were important factors affecting soil properties.

Statistical assessment of seasonal variation of groundwater quality in carsamba coastal plain, Samsun (Turkey)

Abdourazakou Maman Hassan et al.

Summary: The carsamba aquifer in Turkey is facing overexploitation due to agricultural and industrial activities. This study investigates the seasonal variations of hydrogeochemical parameters and assesses the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation in the coastal aquifer. The results show that seawater intrusion, rock-water interaction, and agricultural activities are the main factors impacting groundwater chemistry.

Nitrogen removal from rural domestic wastewater by subsurface wastewater infiltration system: A review

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: The subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) is widely used in rural decentralized sewage treatment due to its cost-effectiveness, low energy consumption, and high efficiency. However, the mechanisms and optimization methods for SWIS nitrogen removal have not been well summarized. This review provides an overview of the nitrogen removal efficiency and mechanism of SWIS, highlights the advantages of different types of fillers and plants used in substrate improvement, and proposes a clear adjustment range and control method for system operating parameters. It also summarizes the role of bioaugmentation in nitrogen removal and evaluates the development and application of SWIS in rural areas.

A comprehensive analysis of contaminated groundwater: Special emphasis on nature-ecosystem and socio-economic impacts

Gaurav Chandnani et al.

Summary: Water is essential for life, but the quality of groundwater worldwide has been influenced by both natural and human factors. The interconnectivity between groundwater and surface bodies has allowed humans to access groundwater sources more easily, but human activities have led to contamination and deterioration of water quality, impacting ecosystems and human health. Controlling groundwater contamination is a major challenge, and innovative techniques and management policies are needed to address the deteriorated quality.

Groundwater hydro-geochemistry, quality, microbiology and human health risk assessment in semi-arid area of Rajasthan, India: a chemometric approach

Najiya Khan et al.

Summary: The groundwater in Alsisar block in India is found to be neutral to alkaline with high salinity and hardness levels, exceeding recommended limits for various ions such as fluoride and nitrate. This poses serious human health risks in the area. The predominant hydrochemical facies in the groundwater are Na+-Mg2+-Cl- and Na+-Mg2+-HCO3-, indicating both geogenic and anthropogenic influences on water quality.

Vulnerability of groundwater to iron and manganese contamination in the coastal alluvial plain of a developing Indonesian city

Anna Fadliah Rusydi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the high concentrations of trace metals in Indonesian coastal groundwater, with Fe2+ and Mn2+ identified as natural contaminants related to salinity and redox-sensitive parameters. The presence of high trace metals is coupled with high DOC, indicating a connection to organic-matter decomposition. Additionally, human activity impacts Fe and Mn dissolution, with a significant elevation in the northern region compared to the relatively more natural conditions in the southern part of the study area.
