Analysis of observed performance of a deep excavation straddled by shallowly buried pressurized pipelines and underneath traversed by planned tunnels

Panpan Guo et al.

Summary: The objective of this paper is to analyze the observed performance of a deep excavation facing severe restrictions from underground facilities or structures in Suzhou, China. The study examines the impact of two shallowly buried pressurized pipelines and the planned construction of twin tunnels on the excavation. Through in-depth analysis of field performance data, the authors capture various characteristics including ground settlements, lateral ground movements, and pipeline deformations. Despite the challenges posed by the restrictions, the specially designed excavation support system effectively controls ground and structural deformations.

Consolidation settlement of vertically loaded pile groups in multilayered poroelastic soils

T. Senjuntichai et al.

Summary: A theoretical model is developed in this study to estimate the consolidation settlement and axial load transfer of vertically loaded pile groups in multilayered poroelastic soils. The axial deformation of each pile is represented by an exponential series obtained from a variational approach, and the required influence functions are obtained using an exact stiffness matrix method. Time-domain solutions are obtained using a numerical Laplace inversion method.

The performance of T-shaped deep mixed soil cement column-supported embankments on soft ground

Liyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the load transfer mechanism, failure pattern, and settlement behavior of T-shaped deep mixing (TDM) pile-supported embankments through three-dimensional numerical simulation. The results show that stress concentration occurs at the variable section of TDM piles, leading to plastic yielding of the pile body and additional compression of soft soil between TDM piles. Parameter analysis reveals that the load transfer, plastic zone, and post-construction settlement are influenced by the height of the enlarged head and pile spacing, while the pile length only affects the post-construction settlement.

Study on the optimization and performance of GFC soil stabilizer based on response surface methodology in soft soil stabilization

Xiushan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) and calcium carbide slag (CCS) were used to modify waste soft soil in coastal areas, aiming to improve the utilization efficiency of industrial waste residue and the treatment effect of marine soft soil. The experimental results showed that the optimal mixing ratio of GGBS, FGDG and CCS was 61:8:31. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the modified soil reached 8.7 MPa at 28 days, which was 1.23 times higher than that of the cement-stabilized soil. Additionally, the modified soil exhibited superior durability. Micro mechanism analysis revealed the formation of gel hydration products (C-S-H, C-A-O-H) and expansive hydration product (AFt) in the modified soil, which led to the aggregation and condensation of soil particles, thereby increasing the strength of the stabilized soil.

Predicting method on settlement of soft subgrade soil caused by traffic loading involving principal stress rotation and loading frequency

Tingyu Wu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a practical method for predicting settlement of soft subgrade under traffic loading effects, using principal stress rotation and loading frequency as parameters obtained from cyclic triaxial tests. The model's applicability was verified by previous research results and validated by field data. Increasing embankment thickness resulted in decreased settlements, with vehicle load being more influential than traffic volume.

Analysis of Features of Long and Short Pile Composite Foundation in High-Rise Buildings

Yong Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mechanical mechanism of long-short-pile composite foundations under the interaction between the superstructure and foundation using the finite element method, field test data, and the standard formula calculation method. The results indicate that laying the cushion changes the stress mechanism of the pile and adjusts the load-sharing ratio of long and short piles. Increasing the long pile length improves the bearing capacity of the foundation, while increasing the raft thickness slows the stress concentration at the long pile's top.

Experimental analysis of embankment on soft soil improved with bottom ash columns

Arshad Ullah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bearing capacity performance of highway embankment models constructed on bottom ash columns reinforced soil. The results showed that bottom ash columns were effective in enhancing the ultimate bearing capacity of improved soil, with the improvement ratio increasing with higher Ar and L/D values.

Evaluation of hypoplastic model for soft clays by modelling of Nicoll highway case history

Jan Jerman et al.

Summary: The newly proposed hypoplastic model was evaluated through modelling the geotechnical failure of a deep excavation of Nicoll Highway in Singapore in 2004. The model demonstrated good comparisons with experimental data and improvements over the original hypoplastic model. Numerical simulations of the excavation collapse showed a good fit with inclinometer data up to the final stages, indicating the significance and effectiveness of the model in predicting such failures.

Minimum cover depth estimation for underwater shield tunnels

Panpan Guo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the estimation of minimum cover depth of underwater shield tunnels by reviewing and validating five different conventional methods. The study concludes that the Japanese minimum seepage water volume method and the mechanical equilibrium method are effective for determining the reasonable minimum cover depth. A new procedure combining appropriate conventional methods and numerical analysis is proposed to estimate the minimum cover depth.
