Serum microcystin-LR levels and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A Chinese nested case-control study

Ying Lin et al.

Summary: This study found an association between serum microcystin-LR (MC-LR) level in the first trimester and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) through a prospective nested case-control study. The results showed that an elevated serum MC-LR level in the first trimester was independently associated with an increased risk of GDM.

Microcystin-leucine arginine exposure induced intestinal lipid accumulation and MC-LR efflux disorder in Lithobates catesbeianus tadpoles

Jun He et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic effects of microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) on tadpole intestines and found that MC-LR exposure caused severe damage, inflammation, and impaired lipid metabolism and toxin efflux in the intestines. Moreover, 2 μg/L of MC-LR exposure weakened the tadpoles' intestinal detoxification ability. These findings provide new evidence for assessing the health risks of MC-LR to amphibians.

Lipid metabolism, immune and apoptosis transcriptomic responses of the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab to the exposure to microcystin-LR

Cheng Chi et al.

Summary: Global warming increases harmful cyanobacterial blooms, and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a hepatotoxic agent produced during these blooms. This study injected different doses of MC-LR into the hepatopancreas of Chinese mitten crab and found that it affected gene expression, leading to triglyceride accumulation and changes in sterol metabolism, apoptosis, and actin cytoskeleton regulation.

Etiology and Management of Dyslipidemia in Patients With Cancer

Mikhail de Jesus et al.

Summary: Due to effective cancer therapies, patients with cancer now have longer life expectancy than before. However, they often face additional health challenges, with cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of illness and death. Both cancer and cardiovascular disease share common mechanisms and risk factors, including lipid abnormalities. Understanding the relationship between lipid metabolism and cancer can provide strategies for cancer prevention and reducing cardiovascular disease risk. However, current cardiovascular risk assessment tools may underestimate the long-term cardiovascular disease risk in this population. Further research is needed to determine the role of non-statin therapies in managing lipid disorders in cancer patients.
