The urban morphology on our planet-Global perspectives from space

Xiao Xiang Zhu et al.

Summary: Urbanization is the second largest mega-trend, and accurate measurements of urban morphological and demographic figures are essential for addressing urbanization issues. However, this database is currently lacking in many countries, especially developing ones. In this study, a novel deep learning and big data analytics approach was used to fuse radar and satellite data, creating a global urban local climate zones classification that covers all cities with a population greater than 300,000. The dataset reveals global inequality patterns and provides insights into the relationship between urban morphology and geographical regions.

Identifying Precarious Settlements and Urban Fabric Typologies Based on GEOBIA and Data Mining in Brazilian Amazon Cities

Bruno Dias dos Santos et al.

Summary: The study reveals that a significant proportion of the urban population in the Amazon region resides in precarious settlements, which exhibit diverse characteristics. By combining geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques, it is possible to identify and classify these settlements, enabling the development of sustainable and effective public policies.

IMMerSe: An integrated methodology for mapping and classifying precarious settlements

Flavia da Fonseca Feitosa et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology for mapping and classifying precarious settlements, which integrates methods, spatial data and knowledge from different sources. The methodology was applied to the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista, Brazil, and was able to identify different settlement typologies and provide knowledge for policy purposes. The collaboration between researchers and policymakers is crucial in the process of coproduction of knowledge for housing policies.
