Updated lunar cratering chronology model with the radiometric age of Chang'e-5 samples

Summary: Lunar chronology models are constructed using the radiometric ages of samples returned by space missions and the distribution of craters on the Moon. The recent Chang'e-5 mission brought back lunar samples with an age of 2.030 +/- 0.004 billion years, which helped update the existing chronology models and revealed significant differences with other models. The updated models provide valuable insights into the chronology and impact history of the inner Solar System.

The gardening process of lunar regolith by small impact craters: A case study in Chang'E-4 landing area

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the evolution of lunar regolith and applied it to the landing area of the Chang'E-4 probe on the farside of the Moon. The research found that larger impact events control the formation of lunar regolith, while the overturning and mixing of lunar regolith on the surface are mainly caused by smaller impact events. The results also suggest that most of the lunar regolith formed before 3.0 billion years ago due to a high impact flux during that time.
