Aboveground biomass density models for NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar mission

Laura Duncanson et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of models used by NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to estimate forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD). The models were developed using globally distributed field and airborne lidar data, with simulated relative height metrics as predictor variables. The study found that stratification by geographic domain and the use of square root transformation improved model performance.

An Assessment of the GEDI Lasers' Capabilities in Detecting Canopy Tops and Their Penetration in a Densely Vegetated, Tropical Area

Ibrahim Fayad et al.

Summary: GEDI's laser measurements tend to underestimate tree heights in densely vegetated, tall forests. The coverage lasers perform slightly worse than the full-power lasers and LVIS. The acquisition time has an impact on the detection of ground return and canopy tops.

Tropical Forest Vertical Structure Characterization: From GEDI to P-Band SAR Tomography

Yen-Nhi Ngo et al.

Summary: Estimating tropical forests' vertical structure using remote sensing is a challenge. Our study shows the potential value of GEDI and TomoSAR acquisitions in producing accurate estimates of forests' vertical structure. By analyzing the airborne P-band TomoSAR, airborne LiDAR, and spaceborne GEDI LiDAR, it was found that both GEDI and P-band TomoSAR can directly measure surface, vegetation heights, and vertical profiles with high resolution and precision.

Assessing Amazon rainforest regrowth with GEDI and ICESat-2 data

Milutin Milenkovic et al.

Summary: Two satellite LiDAR missions, GEDI and ICESat-2, provide global measurements of forest height and structure. This study utilized both missions' data to assess regrowth rates in regrowing forests of different ages in Rondonia, Brazil. A calibration model was derived to improve the accuracy of satellite height measurements, and the results showed reliable estimates of forest regrowth rates over large areas.
