An Experimental Study on Measuring Breaking-Wave Bubbles with LiDAR Remote Sensing

David Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the viability and potential of using above-water LiDAR remote sensing to characterize subsurface bubble plumes. After the onset of wave breaking, active wave breaking leads to a rapid increase in LiDAR backscatter, while the decay rate of LiDAR backscatter from dissipated bubble plumes is consistent with previous studies on void fraction decay rate.

Modulation of Bubble-Mediated CO2 Gas Transfer Due To Wave-Current Interactions

Youngmi Shin et al.

Summary: Wave breaking modulates air-sea fluxes and the interaction between waves and currents affects the bubble-mediated gas transfer coefficients. Submesoscale current gradients can enhance the gas transfer coefficient, especially along temperature fronts and cold filaments. This has the potential to enhance CO2 exchange in regions with increased submesoscale activity.

On the Transfer of Microbubbles by Surface Waves

O. A. Druzhinin

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of a near-surface water layer populated by air bubbles in the presence of a stationary surface wave through direct numerical simulation (DNS). The results show that rising bubbles enhance the carrier-flow turbulence and their dynamics are governed by buoyancy, the surrounding fluid acceleration force, and the drag force. The parameterizations of the vertical and horizontal fluxes of the void fraction reveal that the horizontal transport of bubbles is controlled by the Stokes drift, while the vertical flux is determined by the terminal bubble velocity in an acquiescent water.

Application of Landsat imagery for the investigation of wave breaking

A. A. Kubryakov et al.

Summary: This study describes an algorithm for retrieving whitecap coverage on the sea surface from Landsat-8 satellite optical reflectance measurements. It compares whitecap distribution with scatterometer measurements of wind speed and analyzes the impact of various phenomena on whitecap coverage and its spatial variation in different ocean areas. The study suggests that whitecap coverage is a proxy of wave energy dissipation and reflects disturbances in the wind-wave energy balance caused by wave-current interactions and variable wind forcing.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method to identify whitecap stages using particle image velocimetry (PIV) based on visible imagery. Results show a linear relationship between whitecap lifetime and the timescale of averaged velocity, allowing for easy determination of whitecap stages using whitecap velocity.

Francesco Barbariol et al.

Summary: This study presents a climatology of wind waves in the Mediterranean Sea based on a 40-year wave hindcast. Results show that significant and maximum individual wave heights in the region are decreasing during summer and increasing during winter, with the Scandinavian index variability being the most correlated to the Mediterranean Sea wind-wave variability.

2D Parametric Model for Surface Wave Development Under Varying Wind Field in Space and Time

Vladimir Kudryavtsev et al.

Summary: A fully consistent 2D parametric model of wave development under spatially and/or time varying winds has been developed in this study. The model provides practical means to rapidly assess the energy, frequency, and direction of dominant surface waves under different wind forcing conditions. Nonlinear interactions, wind energy input, and wave breaking dissipation play key roles in governing the evolution of wave energy.

Self-Similarity of Surface Wave Developments Under Tropical Cyclones

Vladimir Kudryavtsev et al.

Summary: The 2D-parametric model proposed in the companion paper is utilized to simulate waves under tropical cyclones, solving equations describing wind waves and swell evolution using the method of characteristics. The results show how wave trains develop and travel through the TC's varying wind field, forming spatial patterns based on TC characteristics. Group velocity resonance leads to waves with abnormally high energy, while self-similar solutions provide immediate estimates of wave parameters under TCs, dividing TCs between slow and fast based on certain conditions.

Modulation of Wind-Wave Breaking by Long Surface Waves

Vladimir A. Dulov et al.

Summary: This study reports field measurements of wave breaking modulations in the Black Sea, showing that short gravity waves play a significant role in wave breaking, while long waves strongly modulate whitecaps. Analysis of the modulation transfer function reveals weak dependence on wind speed and a windward shift of whitecapping from long wave crests by 15 degrees. A proposed simple model accurately reproduces the modulations' magnitude, phase, and non-sinusoidal shape in agreement with the measurements.

Total Surface Current Vector and Shear From a Sequence of Satellite Images: Effect of Waves in Opposite Directions

Fabrice Ardhuin et al.

Summary: The study proposes a method based on Sentinel-2 data and numerical simulation to estimate near-surface shear in the ocean. The research shows that paying special attention to opposing waves and using least squares fit can better estimate current velocity. Furthermore, increasing time lags, resolution, and exposure time of acquisition can improve the retrieval of TSCV and shear.
