Evaluation of water conservation function of Beijiang River basin in Nanling Mountains, China, based on WEP-L model

Fei Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the multiple time-scale characteristics of water conservation in the Beijiang River Basin and revealed its response to climate change. The results showed a decreasing trend in annual water conservation, but a slight increasing trend in winter. The spatial distribution of water conservation was mainly influenced by land use.

Regulated Ecosystem Services Trade-Offs: Synergy Research and Driver Identification in the Vegetation Restoration Area of the Middle Stream of the Yellow River

Ge Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact and driving mechanism of ecological restoration on the relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The results show that different vegetation restoration models have significant differences in the restoration rate of ESs and affect the relationship between different ESs.

Water conservation can reduce future water-energy-food-environment trade-offs in a medium-sized African river basin

C. Siderius et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need to achieve efficient and sustainable use of water resources. This study explores the costs and potential water savings of various water conservation measures in the Rufiji basin, Tanzania. The results show that the cost of these measures is higher than the value of water use in agriculture and hydropower generation, but lower than the ecosystem value. However, implementing financially viable water conservation methods could significantly reduce the additional water required for irrigation expansion in the basin.

Relationships of multiple landscape services and their influencing factors on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Yanzhen Hou et al.

Summary: The study focuses on understanding the landscape service relationships, dynamics, and influencing factors in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to achieve sustainable landscape management. By evaluating the spatiotemporal distribution and relationships of multiple landscape services, the study identifies influencing factors such as temperature, elevation, population size, land use, and land cover. The results show variations in landscape services across the region and highlight the importance of considering trade-offs and synergies in sustainable landscape management.

Spatio-temporal changes in water-related ecosystem services provision and trade-offs with food production

Shiliang Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a spatio-temporal assessment framework to evaluate the impact of food production-driven land use change on water-related ecosystems and services, revealing trade-offs and synergies between food production and ecosystem services provision. To achieve simultaneous development of food production and ecosystem protection, a sustainable agricultural production system must be established with appropriate management measures.

Quantifying the effect of environmental drivers on water conservation variation in the eastern Loess Plateau, China

Jinfeng Wang et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau, known for water shortages and soil erosion, faces challenges in maintaining regional ecological security. The study in the Zhanghe River Basin on the eastern Loess Plateau showed a slight decrease in water conservation, with greater conservation in northern areas with dense vegetation. Human activities were found to be the main factor contributing to the reduction in water conservation in recent decades.
