Multiscale mapping of local climate zones in Tokyo using airborne LiDAR data, GIS vectors, and Sentinel-2 imagery

Chaomin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiscale automated LCZ classification scheme was developed in the 23 special wards of Tokyo using airborne LiDAR data, Sentinel-2 imagery, and GIS vector data. By optimizing thresholds and fuzzy logic classifiers, LCZ mapping was conducted at block scale and different grid-cell scales (100 m-1000 m). The relationship between LCZ and land surface temperature (LST) was explored using multidate thermal infrared data. The results showed that optimizing thresholds significantly improved the overall accuracy of LCZ classification at all scales, and there were significant differences in LCZs and LSTs among different mapping units. The study provides a promising insight into GIS-based LCZ mapping and LCZ-LST relationships at multiple scales.

Ayman Aslam et al.

Summary: The study reviews methods and data sources used in empirical research on local climate zones (LCZ), with a focus on identifying recurrent themes. It finds that most LCZ research has been conducted in Chinese cities and that Landsat and WUDAPT methodology are commonly favored due to their simplicity and availability of global datasets. The review also reveals various software and methodologies for identifying climate-sensitive areas in urban settlements. LCZs are being used in crosscutting phenomena such as thermal comfort, urban planning, climate change adaptation, and energy use.
