Distinguishing Algal Blooms from Aquatic Vegetation in Chinese Lakes Using Sentinel 2 Image

Jing Pu et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to effectively extract algal blooms and aquatic vegetation from turbid water bodies using high spatial resolution Sentinel 2 images. By combining the extraction results from multiple indices and utilizing image time series information, the study successfully distinguished algal blooms and aquatic vegetation in five typical lakes in China and mapped their spatial distributions.

Mapping algal bloom dynamics in small reservoirs using Sentinel-2 imagery in Google Earth Engine

Chippie Kislik et al.

Summary: This study tests the use of Sentinel-2 imagery in Google Earth Engine for detecting algal blooms in two small freshwater reservoirs in northern California. The results show that Sentinel-2 imagery can capture greater spatial and temporal heterogeneity of algal blooms than traditional in situ sampling.

Analysis of Floating Macroalgae Distribution around Japan Using Global Change Observation Mission-Climate/Second-Generation Global Imager Data

Naokazu Taniguchi et al.

Summary: This study used satellite data to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of floating macroalgae distribution around Japan from 2018 to 2021. The results showed that the coverage of floating macroalgae varies spatially and seasonally, with peak values occurring in the spring and summer in the southwestern area.

A spectral index for the detection of algal blooms using Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) imagery: a case study of Hulun Lake, China

Mengmeng Cao et al.

Summary: Algal blooms in lakes have become a significant challenge in recent years, and remote sensing technology, particularly the ABDI proposed in this study, has shown to be an effective method for detection. The study conducted in Hulun Lake, China, demonstrated that ABDI had high accuracy in identifying algal bloom areas, and was less affected by environmental conditions compared to other indices. The research also highlighted the influence of meteorological factors on algal blooms and the potential applicability of ABDI in other regions.

A Review of Remote Sensing of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation for Non-Specialists

Gillian S. L. Rowan et al.

Summary: Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is a critical but understudied component of aquatic ecosystems, which is rapidly changing due to global climate change and human disturbances. Remote sensing (RS) offers efficient and accurate large-scale monitoring for proper SAV management, though its application to underwater ecosystems is complicated by the water column effect and requires careful consideration of sensor selection and data processing methods. Successful use of RS for SAV identification and detection depends on factors such as data quality, resolution, and the specific research goals.

Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 Observations for Harmful Algae Blooms in a Small Eutrophic Lake

Miao Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized multi-spectral and operational land imaging instruments to monitor spatial and seasonal variations in floating algae blooms in Lake Xingyun, China from 2016 to 2020. Results showed that floating algae occurred more in the northern region and were more frequent in summer and autumn seasons.

Reproduction of the Marine Debris Distribution in the Seto Inland Sea Immediately after the July 2018 Heavy Rains in Western Japan Using Multidate Landsat-8 Data

Shilin Song et al.

Summary: In this study, changes in marine debris distributions after a heavy rain disaster in western Japan in July 2018 were investigated using Landsat-8 data. The majority of the marine debris accumulated in the northern part of Aki Nada in the Seto Inland Sea. The corrected floating algae index (cFAI) method was found to be effective in analyzing the spectral characteristics of marine debris and eliminating the influence of background water turbidity.

Guangzong Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an adaptive threshold model for extracting Ulva prolifera in the Southern Yellow Sea using remote sensing imagery, improving accuracy and robustness. The study shows a decreasing trend in Ulva prolifera coverage area over five years and analyzes reasons for smaller algal scale in 2017 and 2018.
