Evaluation of Landsat image compositing algorithms

Shi Qiu et al.

Summary: We proposed a new image compositing algorithm (MAX-RNB) and evaluated it together with nine other algorithms. The results demonstrated that the performance of the algorithms varied depending on the compositing intervals and cloud cover. This study provides comprehensive guidance for selecting the most appropriate image compositing algorithm for different applications.

Warming-induced increase in carbon uptake is linked to earlier spring phenology in temperate and boreal forests

Hongshuang Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature on the spring phenology of the previous growing season and the current year. The findings suggest that warmer temperatures during the previous growing season are associated with earlier spring phenology in the current year, and that increased photosynthesis in the previous growing season contributes to the earlier spring phenology.

A commentary review on the use of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the era of popular remote sensing

Sha Huang et al.

Summary: The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a popular index for vegetation assessment due to its simplicity and ability to be calculated with any multispectral sensor. However, considerations such as atmospheric effects, saturation phenomena, and sensor factors must be taken into account to ensure effective use of NDVI in various applications, particularly in the UAV user community.

Potential and Challenges of Harmonizing 40 Years of AVHRR Data: The TIMELINE Experience

Stefan Dech et al.

Summary: Earth Observation satellite data allows for monitoring large areas of the planet at predefined intervals, but long-term impacts of climate change require data spanning several decades. The AVHRR sensor family provides a 40-year daily observation time span, essential for studying climate change effects. Generating long-term time series requires meticulous preprocessing and harmonization to ensure data accuracy and reliability.

Retrieval and validation of forest background reflectivity from daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data across European forests

Jan Pisek et al.

Summary: The study suggests that accurate retrievals of forest understory NDVI can be obtained using MODIS data and a specific method, with better performance in forest types with open canopies, but limitations in forests with closed canopies and high foliage cover.
