RSEIFE: A new remote sensing ecological index for simulating the land surface eco-environment

Ziwei Wang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of remote sensing technology, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) has been widely used for evaluating eco-environmental quality. However, the limitations of RSEI, such as lack of uniform application, stochastic results, and inability to consider all ecological elements, have led to the proposal of a new index named RSEIFE. Comparisons with other evaluation models have shown that RSEIFE has a more stable calculation process, consistent results with the real eco-environment, and the ability to reveal more details about its features. Moreover, RSEIFE effectively demonstrates the ecological benefits of both water bodies and their surrounding environments, providing a more accurate and comprehensive basis for environmental protection policies.

Instability of remote sensing based ecological index (RSEI) and its improvement for time series analysis

Zihao Zheng et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, monitoring land surface ecological status (LSES) based on remote sensing has made progress. The most widely used model in this field is the Remote Sensing-based Ecological Index (RSEI), but its application in multiple scenarios is uncertain. This paper analyzes the instability of RSEI and proposes improved models to evaluate accuracy and stability.

Time-frequency optimization of RSEI: A case study of Yangtze River Basin

Xinyue Yang et al.

Summary: This study utilizes three common data reconstruction algorithms to optimize the calculation process of RSEI by reconstructing the MODIS time series data in the Yangtze River Basin. The results show that data reconstruction can fill gaps in RSEI, and WS and SG have better reconstruction performance than HANTS. The findings of this study are of great significance for improving the ecological monitoring performance of RSEI.

Pixel-scale historical-baseline-based ecological quality: Measuring impacts from climate change and human activities from 2000 to 2018 in China

Junbang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a conceptual framework for assessing changes in ecological quality of Chinese terrestrial ecosystems. The framework utilizes remote sensing data and ecosystem process models to analyze the changes from 2000 to 2018. The results show that the ecological quality index has different spatial patterns based on vegetation distribution. Climate change and human activities are identified as the main driving factors of ecological quality changes.

Jiaxi Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the trend of ecological conditions in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau using remotely sensed data. They found distinct periods of ecological degradation and restoration and analyzed the correlation between different ecological indices and principal component analysis results. Overgrazing was identified as one of the main causes of ecological deterioration, and the study period showed an increasing trend in temperature and precipitation.

Synthesized remote sensing-based desertification index reveals ecological restoration and its driving forces in the northern sand-prevention belt of China

Ang Chen et al.

Summary: This study constructed a new remote sensing-based desertification index (RSDI) for the northern sand-prevention belt (NSPB) in China, and analyzed its spatiotemporal changes and driving forces from 2000 to 2020. The research found that the degree of aeolian desertification in the NSPB has decreased in the past 20 years and its ecological quality has continued to recover, but unreasonable human activities still need to be reduced and ecological management in areas under serious threat of desertification needs to be strengthened.

Quantization of the coupling mechanism between eco-environmental quality and urbanization from multisource remote sensing data

Dong Xu et al.

Summary: The rapid urbanization in central and eastern China poses a major threat to the green sustainable development of the ecological environment. However, understanding the interactive coupling mechanism between urbanization and ecological environmental quality (EEQ) is crucial for achieving the urban sustainable development goal. Through the use of multi-source remote sensing data, this study investigated the temporal and spatial characteristics of urbanization and EEQ in the central and eastern regions of China, and explored the coupling mechanism between them. The results show that urbanization and the coupling coordination degree continually increased from 1992 to 2015, especially in the three major urban agglomerations, with a spatial distribution pattern of low inside, high outside, high in the east and low in the west.
