Evaluation of wave model performance in the South Atlantic Ocean: a study about physical parameterization and wind forcing calibration

Julia Kaiser et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the performance of the spectral wave model WAVEWATCH III for the South Atlantic Ocean forced by wind inputs from the most recent reanalyses, NCEP/CFSR and ECMWF/ERA5, combined with two different source terms. The results suggest that both source terms provide good results when the model is properly adjusted for the wind input. Additionally, simulations forced by ERA5 winds show better performance, especially for shorter wave periods.

Implementation of a multi-grid operational wave forecast in the South Atlantic Ocean

R. M. Campos et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of an operational wave forecast system in the South Atlantic Ocean, which achieved a balance between model accuracy and computational cost by using a multi-grid scheme and fine-tuning the WAVEWATCH-III model. The forecast evaluation was performed based on wind speed and significant wave height, and the results showed high correlation coefficients and low errors.

Can Multi-Mission Altimeter Datasets Accurately Measure Long-Term Trends in Wave Height?

Ian R. Young et al.

Summary: A long-duration, multi-mission altimeter dataset was analyzed to evaluate its accuracy in measuring long-term trends in significant wave height. Two calibration methods were investigated, with the altimeter-altimeter approach showing larger positive trends globally. However, both methods are affected by temporal non-homogeneity between altimeter missions. The study concluded that the accuracy in determining trends in significant wave height is limited to approximately +/- 0.2 cm/year. The sampling pattern of the altimeters was also examined, and it was found that under-sampling can bias trend estimates at the 99th percentile level, but not significantly at lower percentiles (90th and mean).

Summary: This article presents a study on improving the accuracy of the IBI-MFC wave model products. By including a new wave data assimilation scheme and developing a new coupled ocean-wave modelling framework, the operational wave system of IBI-MFC has been upgraded, resulting in significant improvements in wave model qualification over the IBI area.

Assessment and Calibration of ERA5 Severe Winds in the Atlantic Ocean Using Satellite Data

Ricardo M. Campos et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the surface winds of ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis in the Atlantic Ocean. The study finds that ERA5 provides high-quality winds for non-extreme conditions, with some errors in tropical latitudes and locations following warm currents. Two calibration models, simple least-squares linear regression (LR) and quantile mapping method (QM), are proposed and compared to remove systematic bias. These models prove to be efficient in improving the accuracy of the reanalysis data.

Global ocean wave fields show consistent regional trends between 1980 and 2014 in a multi-product ensemble

L. Erikson et al.

Summary: By using a global wave product ensemble, we quantify trends in global ocean surface wave characteristics between 1980 and 2014 and establish regions with robust trends. Our findings show that 30-40% of the global ocean experienced seasonal trends in wave characteristics, with the Southern Hemisphere exhibiting significant upward trends in wave height and period. Basins with positive trends are larger than those with negative trends.

Seasonality of wind speeds and wave heights from 30 years of satellite altimetry

Justin E. Stopa

Summary: The study develops a non-parametric method to classify seasons and reveals unique global seasonal patterns of wind speed and wave height using multi-platform calibrated altimeter data. The results show that some ocean regions have seasonal shapes different from sinusoids, while some regions exhibit strong seasonal inter-annual variability.

The role of the power law exponent in wind energy assessment: A global analysis

Christopher Jung et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the error in wind potential assessments resulting from applying the mean of the power law exponent or a value of 0.14. It was found that using the mean of the power law exponent may lead to minor errors in capacity factor estimation in many regions where the wind resource is abundant.

Sea State Decadal Variability in the North Atlantic: A Review

Antoine Hochet et al.

Summary: Long-term changes of wind-generated ocean waves have significant impacts on marine engineering and coastal management. Natural fluctuations of atmospheric circulation are closely related to the multi-annual variability of wave parameters in the North Atlantic, while anthropogenic climate change is also expected to affect sea states. Disentangling the anthropogenic signal from natural variability is challenging due to short observation periods and significant signal variability.
