Persistent Eastward EEJ Enhancement During the Geomagnetic Storm Recovery Phases

Qiaoling Li et al.

Summary: Recent case studies have shown that during the recovery phase of geomagnetic storms, there can be persistent long-duration eastward enhancements in the equatorial ionospheric electric field, contrary to what was previously anticipated. This study examines the occurrence and morphology of this persistent enhancement and its impact on the distribution of ionospheric plasma at low latitudes. The results indicate that the dayside eastward enhancement is an important disturbed pattern of the equatorial ionospheric electric field during the late recovery phases, and it generally intensifies the equatorial ionization anomaly.

Hemispherically Asymmetric Evolution of Nighttime Ionospheric Equatorial Ionization Anomaly in the American Longitude Sector

Xuguang Cai et al.

Summary: The GOLD mission observed the hemispherically asymmetric evolution of the equatorial ionization anomaly after sunset on 19 November 2018, with the southern crest shifting poleward but the northern crest remaining in the same latitude region. This asymmetric evolution was due to the hemispheric asymmetry in plasma transport by E x B drifts and neutral winds.

Development of the Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar and Preliminary Results

Xinan Yue et al.

Summary: Led by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a new modular active digital phased array radar (SYISR) with solid-state transmission and digital receiving has been developed in Sanya, China. The SYISR has unique features including a single-channel T/R unit and antenna, a radar array monitoring and calibration network, environmental adaptability design and open architecture. With 4,096 channels and 5,930 modules, the radar meets or exceeds the designed values for technical indices. Experimental results on ionospheric parameters, plasma lines, irregularities and hard targets are encouraging.

Initial Ionospheric Ion Line Results and Evaluation by Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar (SYISR)

Honglian Hao et al.

Summary: A new incoherent scatter radar (SYISR) has been established in Sanya, China, which can detect low-latitude ionospheric plasma by conducting continuous operation and electronic beam steering. The observations from SYISR are compared with international reference ionosphere model and other measurements, showing good consistency and providing important information for studying atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling and ionospheric scintillation at low latitudes in East Asia.
