High spatiotemporal resolution estimation of AOD from Himawari-8 using an ensemble machine learning gap-filling method

Aoxuan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an ensemble machine-learning approach was developed to obtain a high spatiotemporal resolution dataset of aerosol optical depth (AOD). By filling the data gaps and using interpolation models, a full-coverage AOD dataset of three highly urbanized areas in 2020 was obtained. Validation against in-situ AOD observations showed satisfactory accuracy (R = 0.80), particularly in spring and summer. Overall, this ensemble machine-learning model provides an effective scheme for reconstructing AOD with high resolution, which can advance the near-real-time monitoring of air quality in urban areas.

Remote Sensing for Water Resources and Environmental Management

Timothy Dube et al.

Summary: In line with UN SDG 6, this special issue aimed to gather articles from scientists around the world on the use of remote sensing technologies to assess and monitor freshwater resources and ensure water security. The issue attracted 13 peer-reviewed articles, with most of them coming from China. Satellite datasets, ranging from coarse to medium spatial resolution, were used in the studies, along with big data processing techniques. The special issue highlighted knowledge gaps in big data image processing techniques and computing processes for water resource assessment and monitoring.

Land use change and climate dynamics in the Rift Valley Lake Basin, Ethiopia

Ayenew D. Ayalew et al.

Summary: In this study, the spatio-temporal dynamics of land use change and climate are analyzed to provide scientific evidence about the gains and losses in major land use categories and associated drivers, as well as the significance and homogeneity of climate change. The results reveal changes in agricultural land, natural vegetation, wetland, water body, and grassland, as well as a shift in climate in the 1980s. The findings also indicate a not significant decreasing trend in rainfall and a significant increasing trend in temperature. The underlying drivers of land use dynamics are identified as rapid population growth, agricultural expansion policy, and climate variability.

Study on the Impact of Spatial Resolution on Fractional Vegetation Cover Extraction with Single-Scene and Time-Series Remote Sensing Data

Yanfang Wang et al.

Summary: The spatial resolution of remote sensing images affects the accuracy and efficiency of extracting fractional vegetation cover. This study analyzes the variations of vegetation cover extracted from images with different spatial resolutions at a specific time and over a time series. The results show that different spatial resolutions exhibit a regular pattern of overestimation or underestimation at different vegetation levels.
