Aerosol characterization in an oceanic context around Reunion Island (AEROMARINE field campaign)

Faustine Mascaut et al.

Summary: This article presents the results of the AEROMARINE field campaign conducted between February and April 2019 off the coast of Reunion Island in the Southern Indian Ocean. The study analyzed marine aerosols, their distribution, and variability, comparing measurements from aircraft flights and ground-based instruments with long-term data from existing stations. The findings suggest that aerosols above 1.5 km are mainly from regional sources, with little impact from the local environment, and that daytime marine aerosol distributions in the free troposphere are representative of nighttime measurements at high altitudes.

Air Pollution Dispersion over Durban, South Africa

Mark R. Jury et al.

Summary: This study investigates air pollution dispersion over Durban using satellite, reanalysis, and in situ measurements. The results show that the city's air pollution concentrations peak during winter prefrontal weather conditions, and are inversely correlated with dewpoint temperature. Descending airflow from the interior highlands brings dust and smoke, impacting air quality. The study also suggests that warm sea surface temperatures in the tropical West Indian Ocean can affect dispersion patterns during winters.

Aerosol Distributions and Transport over Southern Morocco from Ground-Based and Satellite Observations (2004-2020)

Tristan Millet et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the optical properties of aerosols on daily and seasonal scales in Southern Morocco. The results show the prevalence of seasonal variations in aerosol optical depth (AOD), with a maximum in summer and a minimum in winter. The study also reveals the regular transport of desert dust aerosols in Southern Morocco during summer. The MERRA-2 dataset is found to be more appropriate for the study region, and both observations and model analysis confirm the dominance of desert dust aerosols in summer and anthropogenic and oceanic aerosols in winter.

Aerosols on the Tropical Island of La Reunion (21°S, 55°E): Assessment of Climatology, Origin of Variability and Trend

Valentin Duflot et al.

Summary: Aerosols are important climate variables that require global-scale observation. This study used measurements from a sun photometer in La Reunion to assess the climatology and types of aerosols in the area. The study found that sea salts are the baseline for aerosols in La Reunion, with biomass burning playing a significant role. The study also evaluated the variability and trend of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and provided a scientific reference for future studies on the impact of wildfires on the atmospheric composition and radiative balance in the southwestern Indian Ocean.

Smoke in the river: an Aerosols, Radiation and Clouds in southern Africa (AEROCLO-sA) case study

Cyrille Flamant et al.

Summary: The study investigated the formation of a river of smoke in southern Africa and found that it is closely related to the evolution of a Cut-off Low (CoL) and a mid-level Tropical Temperate Trough (TTT). The presence of the CoL leads to the thickening of the smoke layer, while the TTT contributes to the transportation of the smoke to the southwestern Indian Ocean. The vertical extent of the smoke layer is affected by the CoL and can reach altitudes higher than the regions where the smoke comes from.

Modeled and observed properties related to the direct aerosol radiative effect of biomass burning aerosol over the southeastern Atlantic

Sarah J. Doherty et al.

Summary: In this study, four models were compared with observations of biomass burning smoke plume and underlying cloud layer. The models showed biases in simulating the plume characteristics, with overestimation of vertical diffusion and underestimation of plume concentrations. Cloud fraction and optical thickness biases varied significantly across the models. The study demonstrated that model improvements in one property may lead to even greater biases in the direct aerosol radiative effect (DARE).

Spatiotemporal Heterogeneity of Aerosol and Cloud Properties Over the Southeast Atlantic: An Observational Analysis

Ian Chang et al.

Summary: In the southeast Atlantic, aerosols above clouds are present for a third of the year. Analysis shows better statistical relationships for aerosol optical depths (AODs) when measured at <15-min temporal resolution compared to 3-h temporal resolution. Additionally, SEVIRI cloud optical depths (CODs) are mostly underestimated compared to MODIS COD retrievals.

Three-dimensional climatology, trends, and meteorological drivers of global and regional tropospheric type-dependent aerosols: insights from 13 years (2007-2019) of CALIOP observations

Ke Gui et al.

Summary: This study utilized CALIOP data to investigate the climatological distribution and trends of tropospheric type-dependent aerosols globally from 2007 to 2019. The results show contrasting vertical distribution patterns of AEC over land and ocean, different contributions of PBL and FT to global TAOD, and correlations between meteorological factors and TAOD.

Long-term multi-source data analysis about the characteristics of aerosol optical properties and types over Australia

Xingchuan Yang et al.

Summary: The spatiotemporal distributions of aerosol optical properties and major aerosol types over Australia show strong seasonal variations and spatial heterogeneity. Most sites exhibit increasing trends in aerosol optical depth (AOD) and decreasing trends in Angstrom exponent (AE). Different regions in Australia have distinct characteristics in terms of major aerosol types, with mixed aerosols dominating all seasons.
