Geophysical and Remote Sensing Assessment of Chad's Groundwater Resources

Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: Due to climate change and human activity, North and Central Africa are facing a significant water shortage. Recent advancements in earth observation technologies have enabled widespread groundwater monitoring. By integrating gravity solutions from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), climatic model outputs, and precipitation data, the study examines groundwater variations in Chad and reveals the average annual precipitation rates, Terrestrial Water Storage Variations (Delta TWS), groundwater storage fluctuations (Delta GWS), and natural recharge rates. The study also identifies the important role of rainfall and groundwater flow paths in recharging the water sources in Chad. The findings highlight the usefulness of GRACE in monitoring groundwater changes and emphasize the importance of understanding monthly groundwater patterns for resource allocation and policy initiatives.

The Groundwater Flow Behavior and the Recharge in the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System during the Wet and Arid Periods

Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) is a large groundwater system consisting of three major sub-basins. This study used a combination of groundwater flow modeling and isotopic data to investigate the system's hydrologic setting and connectivity. It found that the NSAS was recharged during wet climatic periods and identified preferential groundwater flow conduits and hindrances.

Geometry of the Magma Chamber and Curie Point Depth Beneath Hawaii Island: Inferences From Magnetic and Gravity Data

Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study utilized land gravity and airborne magnetic data to investigate the depth to the magmatic chamber and heat flow distribution beneath the active volcanoes of Hawaii Island. Dense intrusive material was observed beneath three adjacent volcanoes, while small chambers were found beneath two others. The depth to the magma layer varied in different regions, with higher heat flow near volcanic eruption zones.

Hydro-Geochemical Applications and Multivariate Analysis to Assess the Water-Rock Interaction in Arid Environments

Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties of groundwater samples taken from the northern outskirts of Assiut. The results showed that most of the groundwater samples were under-saturated with carbonate and evaporite mineral dissolution. Ion exchange between alkali and earth alkaline elements was observed. The groundwater types were mainly Ca-HCO3 and Mg-HCO3, and the key factors influencing groundwater salinity were alkali, earth alkaline elements, and sulphate. It was also found that the slightly saline groundwater in the western desert margins posed a health risk.
