Comprehensive study of energy and water exchange over the Tibetan Plateau: A review and perspective: From GAME/Tibet and CAMP/Tibet to TORP, TPEORP, and TPEITORP

Yaoming Ma et al.

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau has significant thermodynamic effects for regional environment and climate change, and understanding the energy and water exchange processes is important. However, estimating the exact spatiotemporal variability of these processes remains a challenge. Through observations, remote sensing, and numerical simulation, significant advances have been made in quantitatively evaluating these processes over the past 25 years.

Response of shallow soil temperature to climate change on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Xiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Under climate change, shallow soil temperature on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has shown a significant warming trend over the past 50 years, influenced by altitude, latitude, and seasonality. Winter soil temperature is primarily affected by station latitude, with a weak insulation effect from snow cover leading to lower warming rates compared to other seasons. The warming rate of soil temperature in winter is also lower than air temperature, indicating a complex interplay between snow cover, insulation, and cooling effects from cold air.

Summary: The study shows that all reanalysis datasets provide highly correlated but cold-biased air temperature. ERA-Interim is found to have the closest agreement with in situ measurements.

Decadal Changes in Soil and Atmosphere Temperature Differences Linked With Environment Shifts Over Northern Eurasia

Liangzhi Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated variations of mean annual air and soil temperatures, and Delta T at 217 sites in northern Eurasia during 1981-2015. It found that changes in the mean annual air and soil temperatures were inconsistent, as soil temperature increase was generally lower than air temperature. The relationships between trends in soil and air temperatures were significant in surface and seasonal frost regions, but insignificant in permafrost regions and deeper ground.

Summary: A study evaluated 10 commonly used gridded air temperature products on the Tibetan Plateau, finding that these products generally underestimate temperatures with noticeable root mean square errors. The China meteorological forcing data set showed the best comparison with observations.

Performance of the CRA-40/Land, CMFD, and ERA-Interim Datasets in Reflecting Changes in Surface Air Temperature over the Tibetan Plateau

Jiaxi Yang et al.

Summary: The study indicated that the CMFD dataset performed best in simulating the surface air temperature over the Tibetan Plateau, with the CRA and ERA datasets showing comparable performance. The CMFD dataset provided a more accurate simulation of the daily mean surface air temperature on an annual scale, while the CRA and ERA datasets performed better in summer than in winter.

ERA5-Land: a state-of-the-art global reanalysis dataset for land applications

Joaquin Munoz-Sabater et al.

Summary: ERA5-Land is a global dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts within the Copernicus Climate Change Service, covering the period from 1950 to the present. It provides enhanced resolution and consistency in describing the evolution of the water and energy cycles, with added value in hydrological and energy cycle analysis.
