Unbiased variable importance for random forests

Markus Loecher

Summary: This article proposes a simple solution to address the misleading issue of Gini importance in random forests. Instead of computing the loss reduction based on the in-bag training samples, the authors suggest using the out-of-bag samples to calculate the loss reduction, which can be viewed as an over-fitting problem.

Summary: This study compared the performance of traditional regression models and support vector machine in estimating aboveground biomass in an agro-pastoral ecology. It found that support vector machine was more suitable for estimating the biomass and accurately mapping its distribution in different regions.

Perennial ryegrass biomass retrieval through multispectral UAV data

Gustavo Togeirode Alckmin et al.

Summary: Frequent biomass measurement is important for optimal perennial ryegrass management in dairy operations. Development of accurate and automated technological solutions for biomass assessment is vital. UAVs with multispectral cameras can help deploy machine learning algorithms for real-time biomass mapping, but radiometric calibration and generalization of models need improvement.

Above-ground biomass estimation from LiDAR data using random forest algorithms

Leyre Torre-Tojal et al.

Summary: This article utilizes random forest models to estimate the biomass of Pinus radiata species in a region of the Basque Autonomous Community. By tuning the hyperparameters and conducting cross-validation, two models with high R-2 values were obtained. These models were then applied to the municipality of Orozko, predicting a biomass that is 16-18% higher than the predictions made by the Basque Government.

Multi-site calibration and validation of a wide-angle ultrasonic sensor and precise GPS to estimate pasture mass at the paddock scale

A. R. Lawson et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic sensors have not been sufficiently validated for their practicality and applicability, leading to low adoption rates. This study performed a multi-site and multi-season calibration and validation of a wide-angle, vehicle-mounted, ultrasonic sensor. The results showed that the ultrasonic sensor can accurately map pasture biomass and determine within-paddock biomass variation in the same time taken to survey a whole paddock using a different tool.

The changing role of perennial ryegrass in dairy pastures in northern Victoria, Australia

Mary-Jane Rogers et al.

Summary: This review summarizes research on perennial ryegrass in the dairy region of northern Victoria, Australia over the past decade. The study reveals that the performance of perennial ryegrass is poor in the hot, dry summers due to high temperatures and limited water availability. As extreme heat events and low water availability are increasing in this region, the dairy industry is focusing on finding new farming systems and alternative species that can adapt to the changing climate conditions.

Prediction of aboveground biomass and dry-matter content in brachiaria pastures by combining meteorological data and satellite imagery

Igor L. Bretas et al.

Summary: This study predicted aboveground biomass (AGB) of Brachiaria pastures in Brazil using satellite and meteorological data, demonstrating a strong correlation between vegetation indexes (VIs) and AGB. Multiple linear regression and random forest algorithms performed well in predicting fresh biomass and dry matter content, showing potential for accurate AGB prediction in Brachiaria pastures. Future research on tropical grasses is needed to enhance the accuracy of dry biomass prediction and support pasture management in Brazil.

Summary: This study successfully developed a sequential neural network model for estimating pasture biomass in five dairy farms in northern Tasmania, Australia, using high-resolution imagery and advanced machine learning techniques, resulting in a relatively high prediction accuracy. The research also revealed the impact of in situ measurements, pasture management, and grazing practices on the model's predictions on different farms.

Summary: By using machine learning algorithms to construct a random forest model, this study investigated the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics and dynamic trends of grassland biomass in the Headwater of the Yellow River. The research results indicate that there are significant spatial variations in aboveground biomass in the region, with the majority of areas showing an increasing trend.
