Deriving Coastal Shallow Bathymetry from Sentinel 2-, Aircraft- and UAV-Derived Orthophotos: A Case Study in Ligurian Marinas

Lorenza Apicella et al.

Summary: Bathymetric surveys in shallow waters are important for navigational safety and environmental studies. In situ surveys with floating acoustic sensors provide high-accuracy data, but are often unfeasible or expensive. Advances in optical imaging from UAVs, aircraft, and satellites allow for bathymetric reconstruction using algorithms. This study applied a reconstruction procedure to orthophotos and Sentinel-2 images, with aircraft-derived bathymetry showing higher accuracy compared to UAV-derived and Sentinel-2 data.

Performance and Uncertainty of Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Empirical Approaches in an Energetic Coastal Environment

Bertrand Lubac et al.

Summary: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of different satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) models and propose an uncertainty model based on inferential statistics. The study analyzed data from the Arcachon Bay inlet in France and found that water column optical properties have high spatio-temporal variability. The best performing model was the cluster-based approach using a green band log-linear regression model. The study also developed an uncertainty model to extrapolate information beyond the calibration dataset, which showed promising results with an error risk of less than 5%. The study highlights the importance of SDB maps in understanding the morphodynamic evolutions of large-scale coastal systems.

Nearshore Bathymetry Based on ICESat-2 and Multispectral Images: Comparison Between Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and Testing Gaofen-2

Xiaohan Zhang et al.

Summary: Accurate bathymetric maps are crucial for understanding marine and coastal ecosystems. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) has become widely used for measuring nearshore water depths with the advancement of satellite and sensor technology. Empirical methods based on in situ measurements and satellite imagery have gained popularity due to their convenience, low cost, and efficiency. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) provides a new opportunity for nearshore bathymetry by using photon counting to accurately measure water depths from spaceborne observations. This study demonstrates the applicability and accuracy of ICESat-2-derived bathymetric points in producing bathymetric maps for coastal areas and islands.
