Cyanate dynamics under algal blooms and sediment resuspension events in a shallow micro-tidal estuary in the lower Chesapeake Bay

Yifan Zhu et al.

Summary: Although cyanate concentrations in estuarine systems have not been studied, this research examines the variations and sources of cyanate in the Lafayette River. The results indicate that cyanate concentrations are correlated with chlorophyll biomass, biomass degradation, and sediment resuspension events. Algal decomposition is suggested as a source of cyanate, and bottom water cyanate concentrations are related to wind-induced sediment resuspension. Additionally, cyanate concentrations in sediment pore water vary between years. The study also confirms that cyanate is an early product of organic matter decomposition and that production and uptake of cyanate are tightly coupled with a high affinity of microbes for cyanate.

Spectral features of ocean colour radiometric products in the presence of cyanobacteria blooms in the Baltic Sea

Ilaria Cazzaniga et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal evolution of in situ remote sensing reflectance patterns during cyanobacteria blooms in the Baltic Sea. It also assessed the suitability of satellite remote sensing data for cyanobacteria detection. The results showed poor agreement between in situ and satellite-derived data, but the bands in the green-red spectral region exhibited potential to indicate the presence and development stage of cyanobacteria blooms.

Increase in chlorophyll-a concentration in Lake Taihu from 1984 to 2021 based on Landsat observations

Ziyao Yin et al.

Summary: This study used Landsat data to trace the water quality changes in Lake Taihu over a period of 38 years. By excluding highly turbid waters and estimating chlorophyll-a (Chla) concentration using an exponential estimation model, the spatiotemporal variation of Chla and its influencing factors were analyzed. The results provide valuable data for eutrophication monitoring and management in Lake Taihu, and the proposed Chla estimation method can be applied to assess eutrophication in other inland waters with similar optical properties.

A new method to map groundwater-dependent ecosystem zones in semi-arid environments: A case study in Chile

Iongel Duran-Llacer et al.

Summary: The intensified use of groundwater has posed a threat to the ecological integrity of groundwater-dependent ecosystems. However, the study of these ecosystems is limited. Therefore, an integrated environmental approach is needed to monitor and manage these ecosystems. This study developed a new geospatial method to map groundwater-dependent ecosystem zones and validated the method through expert surveys, remote sensing-GIS, and fieldwork.

Long-term monitoring particulate composition change in the Great Lakes using MODIS data

Jiafeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study used a semianalytical algorithm to estimate the ratio of chlorophyll a to total suspended solids (Chla/TSS) in the Great Lakes based on MODIS images. The long-term spatial and temporal characteristics of Chla/TSS were obtained from 2000 to 2020. Climate and hydrological factors were found to dominate the variations in Chla/TSS, and significantly low values of Chla/TSS in spring had the potential to predict the occurrence of blooms in Lake Erie.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of Chl-a values in six Araucanian lakes in Central-South Chile. By combining in-situ measurements and satellite images, models were created to estimate Chl-a values and validated using statistical indicators. The study observed higher Chl-a values in lakes during the Summer months compared to Spring, with the presence of two invasive species potentially impacting the lake ecosystems.

Hot moments and hotspots of cyanobacteria hyperblooms in the Curonian Lagoon (SE Baltic Sea) revealed via remote sensing-based retrospective analysis

Diana Vaiciute et al.

Summary: A detailed analysis of cyanobacteria blooms in the Curonian Lagoon from 1985 to 2018 revealed a tendency towards later occurrence and longer duration of blooms. Factors affecting the presence and area of blooms include cyanobacteria standing stock and ambient wind conditions. Spatial patterns of blooms are influenced by water renewal time, current patterns, and potential nutrient sources. Despite efforts to control eutrophication, the lagoon is still considered to be in poor ecological status.
