Evaluation and Comparison of Six High-Resolution Daily Precipitation Products in Mainland China

Xiaoran Wu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated and compared six high-resolution daily precipitation products in nine regions of mainland China. The results show that GSMaP performs best, especially based on the Pearson correlation coefficient and critical success index. ERA5-Land and MSWEP tend to have the highest probability of detection values, and MSWEP tends to have the smallest relative root mean squared error values. Almost all precipitation products perform better in summer and worse in winter, and they are more accurate in the eastern region.

Sustainable Path of Food Security in China under the Background of Green Agricultural Development

Yinglei Deng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the complex causality of sustainable food security in China. A comprehensive evaluation system of agricultural green development is constructed using economic data and agricultural greening indices. The results show that there has been an increase in comprehensive assessments in recent years, and there is a shift towards higher coordination in the mid and southern areas. China's agricultural green transformation and sustainable food security are mutually reinforcing.

Do ERA5 and ERA5-land precipitation estimates outperform satellite-based precipitation products? A comprehensive comparison between state-of-the-art model-based and satellite-based precipitation products over mainland China

Jintao Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that satellite-based precipitation products generally outperform model-based products, but the latter perform better in high-latitude regions and winter. ERA5 and ERA5-Land show similar spatio-temporal patterns and have their own advantages. Satellite products perform best in subregions of subtropical and tropical monsoon climate.

Mohammad Sadegh Keikhosravi-Kiany et al.

Summary: Satellite remote-sensing products with high spatial and temporal resolution are valuable sources of precipitation information, especially for data-sparse and remote regions. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of four precipitation products in Iran and found that GPM IMERG and TRMM 3B43 outperformed CHIRPS and ERA5 in capturing precipitation and meteorological droughts, particularly in identifying drought events in western and southwestern regions.

Evaluation of ERA5-Land and HARv2 Reanalysis Data at High Elevation in the Upper Dudh Koshi Basin (Everest Region, Nepal)

Arbindra Khadka et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of meteorological variables in the Everest region (Nepal) using ERA5-Land and HARv2 reanalyses in comparison with in situ observations. The gridded datasets are able to resolve mesoscale atmospheric processes but struggle to reproduce local processes, especially for variables with large spatial variability. Air temperature is well captured by the reanalyses, but a cold bias is observed. The representation of atmospheric water content is good, but a small humid bias and overestimation of precipitation during the monsoon are observed. The agreement between reanalyses and observed radiations depends on the elevation difference, and the seasonality of wind speed is only captured by HARv2.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal changes in potential evapotranspiration (PET) in the Heilongjiang River basin, China and their relationship with vegetation cover and land use. The results show significant differences in PET and fractional vegetation cover (FVC) changes according to land use, with a negative correlation between PET and vegetation coverage.

Evaluation of IMERG and ERA5 precipitation products over the Mongolian Plateau

Ying Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of precipitation datasets over the Mongolian Plateau and found that they can broadly capture seasonal precipitation cycles and spatial patterns. However, there are still some deficiencies, such as overestimating weak precipitation and underestimating high-intensity precipitation. Among the datasets, ERA5-Land performed the best in describing daily precipitation. In addition, IMERG showed poor detection capabilities in forests due to topographic complexity.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of eight high-resolution precipitation products in China and finds that CMFD performs best in estimating precipitation amounts and monitoring extreme precipitation, while APHRODITE is the best at detecting precipitation occurrences. The performance of different products also varies in different regions.

Risks to the Health of Russian Population from Floods and Droughts in 2010-2020: A Scoping Review

Elena A. Grigorieva et al.

Summary: Climate change and natural disasters have a significant impact on human health, particularly in Russia. This review examines climatological and hydrological extremes in Russia from 2010 to 2020, focusing on floods, droughts, and their effects on population health. The study concludes that while it may not be possible to prevent all hazardous weather events, many health impacts can be mitigated through early warning systems, public health preparedness, and building climate resilient health systems.

Spatial performance of multiple reanalysis precipitation datasets on the southern slope of central Himalaya

Yingying Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates different resolution precipitation datasets over the southern slope of central Himalaya in Nepal, finding that high-resolution datasets better present observed spatial patterns but generally overestimate precipitation, and can better reproduce seasonal precipitation variations. Coarse resolution datasets perform poorly in mountainous regions.

Summary: The study evaluated monthly mean precipitation estimates of seven products, finding that they reasonably represent climatological features but exhibit systematic biases. Spatial variability is more pronounced in winter precipitation, and ensemble mean outperforms individual products. The products perform well in simulating seasonality.
