Deep Clouds on Jupiter

Michael H. Wong et al.

Summary: Research on deep clouds in Jupiter's atmosphere shows that there is water cloud present, which is closely related to planetary formation, weather, and circulation processes. However, there is still substantial uncertainty regarding the atmospheric water abundance on Jupiter, and remote sensing and in situ measurement methods still have room for improvement.

Hot Exoplanetary Atmospheres in 3D

William Pluriel

Summary: Hot giant exoplanets, unique in the Solar System, provide the opportunity to study atmospheric behavior under extreme conditions. Due to their 3D nature, in contrast to the common 1D assumption, their thermal and chemical day-night dichotomies and extreme wind dynamics require adapted models for self-consistent and accurate analysis of transit, eclipse, and phase curve observations. The synergy between models and observations is emphasized in order to characterize atmospheres using data from new generation instruments.

Unexpected long-term variability in Jupiter's tropospheric temperatures

Glenn S. Orton et al.

Summary: An essential part of planetary climatology is understanding the tropospheric temperature field and variability. Previous studies on Jupiter suggested the presence of periodic behavior and a relationship between tropospheric and stratospheric temperatures. This study derived upper-tropospheric temperatures over 40 years and discovered periodicities involving different latitude bands that were disconnected from seasonal changes in solar heating. The behavior observed suggests a top-down control of equatorial tropospheric temperatures from stratospheric dynamics, which has implications for future climate models and exoplanet studies.

Saturn's seasonal variability from four decades of ground-based mid-infrared observations

James S. D. Blake et al.

Summary: Ground-based mid-infrared images of Saturn over a multi-decade period reveal seasonal and non-seasonal variability in thermal emission. 8-m class observatories can resolve thermal contrasts on various scales and confirm the consistency of Saturn's thermal structure from year to year. However, inter-annual variations are observed in the equatorial banding, suggesting the influence of tropospheric meteorology.

Giant Planet Atmospheres: Dynamics and Variability from UV to Near-IR Hubble and Adaptive Optics Imaging

Amy A. Simon et al.

Summary: Observations of the giant planets have been limited to infrequent robotic spacecraft missions, but the Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes with adaptive optics have provided high-resolution imaging and long-term monitoring. These observations have allowed for in-depth studies of the clouds, winds, and atmospheric structure, as well as comparisons between different planets and regions. Temporal variations in various aspects of the atmospheres have been measured, and future facilities will further enhance our understanding of atmospheric evolution on these planets.

Joint evolution of equatorial oscillation and interhemispheric circulation in Saturn's stratosphere

Deborah Bardet et al.

Summary: A new model shows that the dynamics of Saturn's stratosphere are influenced by the interplay between radiation, chemistry, and dynamics, with the equatorial oscillation driven by the seasonal variability of wave activity and interhemispheric circulation.

The Spatial Variation of Water Clouds, NH3, and H2O on Jupiter Using Keck Data at 5 Microns

Gordon L. Bjoraker et al.

Summary: By obtaining high-resolution spectra of Jupiter, we were able to analyze the spatial variation of NH3, H2O, and deep clouds on the planet. Our findings revealed significant variations in NH3 abundance in different latitudes and longitudes, as well as variations in the H2O abundance. This study provides important insights into the atmospheric structure and composition of Jupiter.

Bolometric night sky temperature and subcooling of telescope structures

R. Holzloehner et al.

Summary: The term sky temperature is used in different contexts, leading to confusion. This study focused on T-sky, the effective bolometric sky temperature for radiative cooling with telescopes. The temperature difference at Cerro Paranal and Cerro Armazones in the Atacama desert largely depends on the atmospheric water vapor column.

Evolution of Saturn's north polar color and cloud structure between 2012 and 2017 inferred from Cassini VIMS and ISS observations

L. A. Sromovsky et al.

Summary: Saturn's north polar region experienced significant changes between 2012 and 2017, particularly in the color shift from dark blue/green to gold in the hexagon region, which can be attributed to alterations in aerosol layers. Spectral observations also revealed the presence of small bright cloud features in the ammonia cloud layer, with varying aerosol optical depths in different areas.

Jupiter's Temperate Belt/Zone Contrasts Revealed at Depth by Juno Microwave Observations

L. N. Fletcher et al.

Summary: Juno microwave radiometer observations of Jupiter's midlatitudes reveal a strong correlation between brightness temperature contrasts and zonal winds, confirming the banded structure extends throughout the troposphere. The transition level, known as the jovicline, is located between 4 and 10 bars, indicating belts change with depth from being NH3-depleted to NH3-enriched, or from physically warm to physically cool, or a combination of both. The implications of this transition are discussed in terms of ammonia redistribution via meridional circulation cells and the mushball precipitation model, showing vertical shear on zonal winds.

Longitudinal variations in the stratosphere of Uranus from the Spitzer infrared spectrometer

Naomi Rowe-Gurney et al.

Summary: The Spitzer Infrared Spectrometer acquired mid-infrared spectra of Uranus near its equinox in 2007, revealing significant thermal and compositional variability in its stratosphere. Longitudinal analysis showed up to 15% variability in gases sensitive to certain wavelengths at stratospheric levels. Optimal estimation inversions suggested that these variations can be explained by a temperature change of less than 3 K in the stratosphere, with potential sources localized to large scale uplift or stratospheric wave phenomena.
