Direct bonding and de-bonding on demand of polystyrene and polyamide surfaces, treated with oxygen plasma

Roman Gunther et al.

Summary: By treating the surfaces of polystyrene and polyamide 12 with O-2 plasma, the number of polar groups capable of hydrogen bond formation was increased, allowing for the joining of incompatible substrates without adhesive by pressing them together. The adhesion strength increased with bonding temperature and both substrates being plasma-treated, reaching adhesive strengths up to 5.5 +/- 1.7 MPa. Additionally, the joint substrates could be rapidly de-bonded on demand simply by treatment with water, and re-bonded by renewed plasma treatment.

Polysaccharide-derivative coated intravascular catheters with superior multifunctional performance via simple and biocompatible method

Se Kye Park et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel strategy for surface modification of intravascular catheters (ICs) using a multifunctional polysaccharide, O-carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC). A micro- and nanoscale porous CMC (p-CMC) layer was created by selectively eliminating polyethylene glycol (PEG) from a CMC/PEG composite. The p-CMC layer exhibited improved hydration rate, superhydrophilicity, antibacterial and antithrombotic properties, as well as anti-adhesion capabilities. The actual p-CMC coated IC showed superior trackability in a curved artificial blood vessel.
