Chemical and Enzymatic Fiber Modification to Enhance the Mechanical Properties of CMC Composite Films

Xiaobao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding plant fibers on the properties of cellulose derivative films. The addition of fibers improved the tensile strength of the films and broadened their application range without negatively affecting their performance. Both chemical and enzymatic treatments improved the fiber crystallinity and tensile strength of the films, with enzymatic treatment showing greater improvement. The surface roughness and pyrolysis residue of the films increased after fiber addition, but other properties remained largely unchanged. Overall, this research highlights the importance of fiber addition for enhancing the properties of cellulose films.

XPS spectra as a tool for studying photochemical and thermal degradation in APbX3 hybrid halide perovskites

Ivan S. Zhidkov et al.

Summary: This article explores the degradation processes in APbX(3) hybrid halide perovskites using XPS and DFT, finding a correlation between stability and the formation of PbX2 degradation product, which can be monitored and confirmed by high-energy XPS and DFT calculations. Moreover, it shows an increasing resistance to stress factors with the substitution of A-site cation from CH3NH3+ to CH(NH2)(2)(+) and then to Cs+.

A review on lignocellulosic biomass waste into biochar-derived catalyst: Current conversion techniques, sustainable applications and challenges

Yi Wen Low et al.

Summary: Biochar, a thermo-chemical conversion product generated from lignocellulosic biomass, has great physicochemical properties and catalytic activities, mainly through gasification and pyrolysis techniques. This review discusses the modification, physical properties, characterization techniques, and applications of biochar, comparing its performance with conventional catalysts. The study suggests that biochar-derived catalyst from lignocellulosic biomass waste could be an alternative to conventional catalysts with further in-depth research.

Microorganisms as bioabatement agents in biomass to bioproducts applications

Victoria Sodre et al.

Summary: The biorefinery concept based on lignocellulosic biomass offers an attractive and sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based refineries, requiring physical-chemical pretreatment and detoxification steps to improve product yields due to the recalcitrance of the biomass. Among detoxification strategies, biological detoxification is considered a more eco-friendly, milder, and cheaper alternative to physical-chemical methods, with various microbial groups being explored for detoxification purposes.

Improvement of wood against UV weathering and decay by using plant origin substances: Tannin acid and tung oil

Yao Peng et al.

Summary: Tannin acid and tung oil were used to treat wood for better durability. Tung oil provided excellent color stability against weathering, while tannin acid acted as a UV absorber and free-radical scavenger. Wood treated with both substances exhibited the best durability during photodegradation and biodeterioration process.
