Polymeric Membranes for Oil-Water Separation: A Review

Evgenia S. Dmitrieva et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the application of bulk synthetic polymers such as polysulfone, polyethersulfone, polyacrylonitrile, and polyvinylidene fluoride for the separation of oil-water emulsions. The methods for hydrophilization of membranes based on these polymers, including polymer blending, introduction of inorganic additives, and surface modification, are analyzed. Membranes based on natural hydrophilic materials, such as cellulose and its derivatives, are also compared.

Prussian Blue decorated g-C3N4 - From novel synthesis to insight study on charge transfer strategy for improving visible-light driven photo-Fenton catalytic activity

Lan Nguyen Thi et al.

Summary: To overcome the limitations in the reversibility of Fe2+/Fe3+ in the Fenton reaction, a reasonable concept of the addition of photoinduced electron donors has been developed. In this study, composites of Prussian Blue and g-C3N4 were synthesized through a solid-state reaction and used as an effective catalyst in the photo Fenton reaction for organic pollutants decomposition. The catalytic efficiencies of the composites were significantly improved, and a reasonable pathway for charge carrier transfer was proposed and demonstrated.

Tannic acid (TA)-based coating modified membrane enhanced by successive inkjet printing of Fe3+ and sodium periodate (SP) for efficient oil-water separation

Hongli Xie et al.

Summary: The wettability of membranes is crucial for treating oily wastewater. This study proposes a facile method using inkjet printing to optimize the tannic acid-based membrane modification process. By synergistically inducing tannic acid deposition with Fe3+ and SP, the hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane is converted to a hydrophilic and underwater oleophobic membrane with high flux and separation efficiency. The optimized membrane also exhibits high antifouling property, reusability, and stability under near neutral pH conditions.

Siphon-driven interfacial photocatalytic reactors enhanced by capillary flow for continuous wastewater treatment

Ran Deng et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel siphon-driven interfacial photocatalytic reactor based on beta-FeOOH-coated fabrics was proposed for the continuous treatment of wastewater with high efficiency. The reactor utilizes gravity-driven liquid flow and can be adjusted by structural parameters to match the reaction rate. The confined capillary flow ensures sufficient contact between the feed and catalysts, as well as sufficient sunlight utilization, leading to high degradation efficiency.

Application of iron-based materials in heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment: A review

Hongwei Luo et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used in wastewater treatment for the removal of organic pollutants, with iron-based catalysts being particularly effective in enhancing reaction efficiency. Additionally, the supplementation of light, electricity, and reducing agents can improve the redox cycle of iron and increase the generation of in situ H2O2, thereby enhancing the reactivity of iron-based materials in AOPs.
