Lattice Boltzmann simulation of the structural degradation of a gas diffusion layer for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the microstructure of carbon fiber-type GDL with different degrees of aging using a stochastic algorithm, and investigates water transport within the reconstructed GDLs using a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method. The results show that as the GDL ages, its water elimination performance decreases significantly, leading to water retention. The degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) makes the GDL more hydrophilic, causing a more severe water flooding problem. A moderate increase in PTFE content improves GDL antiaging performance, while excessive content reduces the effective porosity and fuel cell performance.

How the Hydrophobic Interface between a Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer and Water Vapor Controls Membrane Hydration

Marielle Soniat et al.

Summary: Stable hydration is crucial for the conductivity and permeability of perfluorinated polyelectrolyte membranes like Nafion. The hydration of Nafion in water vapor is controlled by interfacial transport resistance, which is not slow diffusion across an interfacial layer but rather a competition between dehydration and rehydration. Computational studies reveal fluctuations in water distributions and interfacial kinetics.

Analysis of Ionic Domain Evolution on a Nafion-Sulfonated Silica Composite Membrane Using a Numerical Approximation Model Based on Electrostatic Force Microscopy

Osung Kwon et al.

Summary: This study used electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) to investigate the impact of ionic channel distribution on the proton conductivity of Nafion-sulfonated silica (SSA) composite membranes. The results showed that Nafion-SSA had twice the average local ionic channel density compared to pristine Nafion, and the distribution of the ionic channel density was non-uniform. Additionally, local agglomerations were observed in approximately 10% of the scanned area, attributed to the presence of SSA. These findings are significant for the quantitative assessment of proton exchange membranes (PEMs).

An efficient barrier toward vanadium crossover in redox flow batteries: The bilayer [Nafion/(WO3)x] hybrid inorganic-organic membrane

Chuanyu Sun et al.

Summary: A family of hybrid inorganic-organic ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) has been prepared, showing improved performance in batteries with higher Coulombic efficiency, energy efficiency, and capacity retention in comparison to traditional Nafion 212 reference membranes. The asymmetrical nature of the hybrid IEMs has been correlated with their enhanced performance in a single-cell vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB).
