Construction of amino-thiol functionalized ion-imprinted chitosan for lead (II) ion removal

Jawza Sh Alnawmasi

Summary: In this study, an ion-imprinting technique was employed to create a lead ion-imprinted sorbent using a derivative of amino-thiol chitosan (Pb-ATCS). The synthetic steps involved amidizing chitosan with 3-Nitro-4-sulfanylbenzoic acid (NSB) units, selectively reducing the -NO2- residues to -NH2, and cross-linking with epichlorohydrin. The resulting sorbent showed a high affinity for Pb (II) ions and a maximum capacity of approximately 300 mg/g.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Uracil-Modified Chitosan as a Promising Adsorbent for Efficient Removal of Congo Red Dye

Nouf F. Al-Harby et al.

Summary: A novel uracil-modified chitosan (UCs) adsorbent has been successfully synthesized and its structure and adsorption performance have been studied. The results show that the adsorption capacity of UCs for anionic Congo Red dye is related to factors such as solution pH, dye concentration, and temperature. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second order and Elovich models, and involves multiple steps. The isotherm analysis indicates that the adsorption of CR dye by UCs follows the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the adsorption process is endothermic and leads to increased randomness in the system.

Noura Y. Elmehbad et al.

Summary: Two novel chitosan derivatives were prepared by incorporating salicylhydrazide into chitosan Schiff base (SCsSB) and chitosan (SCs). Two nanocomposites, SCs/TiO2-1% and SCs/TiO2-3%, were also prepared. Their structures were confirmed using elemental analyses, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX and TEM. The new chitosan derivatives exhibited strong antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities, with low minimum inhibitory concentrations against various bacteria and fungi. This research provides a new approach for the development of new antimicrobial agents.

Design, Synthesis and Adsorption Evaluation of Bio-Based Lignin/Chitosan Beads for Congo Red Removal

Xiaobing Han et al.

Summary: Morphology and intermolecular interaction are important factors in the design of efficient dye adsorbents. In this study, millimeter-sized bead-type adsorbents based on lignin/chitosan were designed for the removal of Congo red. The adsorbents showed high adsorption capacity and removal rate due to electrostatic attraction, pi-pi stacking, and hydrogen bonding. The results also showed that the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads had the highest adsorption capacity and removal rate, and the adsorbents exhibited good recyclability.
