Advances in extraction, purification, structural characteristics and biological activities of hemicelluloses: A review

Yanan Gao et al.

Summary: Hemicelluloses, a non-cellulosic heteropolysaccharide, are a major component of plant cell walls and the second most abundant renewable resource after cellulose. Despite its complex structure and variations among different plant species, hemicelluloses have remarkable biological activities that have been largely underutilised. Comprehensive investigations into the structural and biological properties of hemicelluloses can lead to rational utilisation and high-value conversion of this resource into agents with enhanced health benefits. This review summarises diverse research initiatives on hemicelluloses properties, including sources, extraction methods, structural characteristics, biological activities, and discusses future research directions.

In-vivo analysis of Protec™ and β-glucan supplementation on innate immune performance and intestinal health of rainbow trout

D. Porter et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of beta-glucan supplementation on the immune response of rainbow trout. The results showed that the fish fed with beta-glucan and ProtecTM diets had more goblet cells in the intestine and higher expression of T- and B-cell marker genes. The ProtecTM diet also showed modulation of innate immune markers and a better immune response to bacterial challenge.

Changes in neutral sugar composition, molar mass and molar mass distribution, and solid-state structures of birch and Douglas fir by repeated sodium chlorite delignification

Yuko Ono et al.

Summary: This study prepared NaClO2-treated residues or holocellulose samples from birch and Douglas fir wood powders through repeated cycles of delignification, and characterized them through various analysis methods. The results showed that neutral sugar composition, size-exclusion chromatograms, and solid-state C-13 NMR analysis can be used for comprehensive characterization of these samples.

The alkaline extraction efficiency of bamboo cell walls is related to their structural differences on both anatomical and molecular level

Jiawei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the alkaline extraction efficiency of bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells is highly related to their structural differences on both anatomical and molecular level. The lignin and hemicelluloses from fibers and parenchyma cells have significant discrepancies in molecular structure, leading to the higher extraction efficiency of parenchyma cells. This indicates that parenchyma cells could be a promising feedstock in the current biorefinery scenario.

Post-harvest quality and shelf life assessment of Agaricus bisporus influenced by nanocellulose/nanohemicellulose loaded starch based packaging

Antony Catherine Flora Louis et al.

Summary: The shelf life and quality of Agaricus bisporus can be prolonged using nanocellulose and nanohemicellulose reinforced starch based packaging material. This material exhibits improved mechanical properties, reduced water vapor permeability, and biodegradability. It can be used for preserving mushrooms with better retention in pH, color, and firmness compared to pure starch film.

UV Blocking and Oxygen Barrier Coatings Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for Packaging Applications

Iftikhar Ahmed Channa et al.

Summary: Photodegradation and oxidation are major causes of food deterioration, but the use of nanofillers and polyvinyl alcohol films can delay degradation and increase the shelf life. The addition of ZnO nanoparticles to the films effectively blocks UV rays and enhances the water contact angle and oxygen barrier properties. Optimized films were applied to packaging and showed improved freshness and oxidation resistance compared to unpackaged apples.

Effect of the high barrier and hydrophobic hemicellulose/montmorillonite film on postharvest quality of fresh green asparagus

Tingyao Lei et al.

Summary: This study improved the gas permeability and hydrophobicity of hemicellulose-based films in high humidity environments by adding montmorillonite and alkyl ketene dimer as functional agents. The synergistic effect of cellulose nanofibers and montmorillonite also enhanced the mechanical strength and water vapor barrier performance of the films. Moreover, the composite films showed excellent preservation effects on fresh green asparagus in high humidity conditions.

Comprehensive Review of Polysaccharide-Based Materials in Edible Packaging: A Sustainable Approach

Yuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Edible packaging is a sustainable product and technology that uses edible materials to package food, with polysaccharides being a reliable source for such packaging materials. While polysaccharides have excellent properties, they still need reasonable modifications to improve their film-forming, mechanical, barrier, and protective properties. Edible packaging has been widely applied in the food packaging industry, providing a zero-emission scheme and reducing dependence on petroleum resources.
