Can we predict the microstructure of a non-woven flax/PLA composite through assessment of anisotropy in tensile properties?

Delphin Pantaloni et al.

Summary: The study investigates the architecture and anisotropy of flax/poly-(lactide) non-woven composites through 3D microtomography and off-axis tensile tests. Mechanical properties are predicted using micro-mechanics and laminate theory, with potential deviation observed at angles greater than 45 degrees. The research suggests that off-axis tensile tests can be used as a simple means of quality control in industrial production facilities.

Influence of water ageing on the mechanical properties of flax/PLA non-woven composites

Delphin Pantaloni et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of flax/PLA composites to water is discussed, showing that increased moisture content irreversibly decreases the mechanical properties of the composites. This decrease is mainly attributed to microstructure evolution caused by the swelling of flax fibers, leading to increased porosity and the appearance of micro-cracks.

The Influence of Chosen Plant Fillers in PHBV Composites on the Processing Conditions, Mechanical Properties and Quality of Molded Pieces

Wieslaw Fracz et al.

Summary: This work developed biocomposites inspired by European policies to reduce plastic waste. It found that using natural fibers, especially hemp fibers, as fillers in the PHBV matrix, can significantly improve mechanical properties and quality of molded pieces.

Identifying potential applications for residual biomass from urban agriculture through eco-ideation: Tomato stems from rooftop greenhouses

Ana Manriquez-Altamirano et al.

Summary: This study aims to utilize solid waste generated from urban agriculture through Circular Economy to reduce waste volume and improve resource utilization. By characterizing the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of tomato stems and identifying materials with similar properties, possible applications of the stems were identified through a creative session with experts, such as making fences and packaging.

Investigations by AFM of Ageing Mechanisms in PLA-Flax Fibre Composites during Garden Composting

Alessia Melelli et al.

Summary: PLA-flax non-woven composites show preferential degradation of flax fibres from the edge to the core during garden composting, while erosion of cell walls occurs within the fibres themselves from the central lumen to the periphery primary wall. The ageing process results in a decrease in indentation modulus for fibres in the preserved core of the composite and a change in PLA morphology towards the edge of the sample.
