Advances in extraction, purification, structural characteristics and biological activities of hemicelluloses: A review

Yanan Gao et al.

Summary: Hemicelluloses, a non-cellulosic heteropolysaccharide, are a major component of plant cell walls and the second most abundant renewable resource after cellulose. Despite its complex structure and variations among different plant species, hemicelluloses have remarkable biological activities that have been largely underutilised. Comprehensive investigations into the structural and biological properties of hemicelluloses can lead to rational utilisation and high-value conversion of this resource into agents with enhanced health benefits. This review summarises diverse research initiatives on hemicelluloses properties, including sources, extraction methods, structural characteristics, biological activities, and discusses future research directions.

Research Progress in Hemicellulose-Based Nanocomposite Film as Food Packaging

Guoshuai Liu et al.

Summary: Hemicellulose, as a main component of agricultural and forestry biomass, has abundant source, biodegradability, nontoxicity and good biocompatibility. However, the mechanical properties and barrier properties of hemicellulose films are not sufficient, and modification for enhancement is still a challenge. Therefore, blending hemicellulose with nanofibers or nanoparticles has attracted research attention for efficient improvement in properties and cost efficiency in food packaging.

Improving Barrier Properties of Xylan-Coated Food Packaging Papers with Alkyl Ketene Dimer

Petronela Nechita et al.

Summary: By chemically modifying xylan hemicellulose with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD), the hydrophobicity of xylan hemicellulose can be improved. Coating the paper surface with xylan hemicellulose and AKD resulted in improved barrier properties and mechanical strength. The results of this study contribute to expanding the applications of hemicelluloses in food packaging papers with appropriate barrier properties using biopolymer coating materials.
