Xiang Shang et al.

Summary: Waterborne polyurethane containing organic selenium was successfully synthesized, which exhibited excellent flame retardancy, self-healing ability, mechanical performance, and emulsion stability. The polymer achieved flame retardancy by scavenging free radicals and utilized the dynamic switch of diselenide for self-healing. The polymer self-extinguished within 1 second and showed high UL-94 level (V-0), self-healing efficiency (91.25%), and mechanical properties (tensile strength of 18.5 MPa and elongation at break of 869.63%). The total heat release was reduced by 23.80% compared to the original waterborne polyurethane.

Extremely Strong and Tough Biodegradable Poly(urethane) Elastomers with Unprecedented Crack Tolerance via Hierarchical Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions

Rui Guo et al.

Summary: This study presents a polyurethane elastomer with unprecedented mechanical properties for in vivo application as hernia patches. The elastomer, obtained by solvent-free reaction, exhibits extremely high strength and toughness. Abundant and hierarchical hydrogen-bonding interactions hinder crystallization and promote the formation of uniformly distributed hard phase microdomains, resulting in high fracture strength, true stress, elongation-at-break, and fracture energy. 3D printed hernia patches made from this elastomer show outstanding mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. These robust and biodegradable elastomers have great potential for in vivo applications.

Improving fire safety and mechanical properties of waterborne polyurethane by montmorillonite-passivated black phosphorus

Sihao Yin et al.

Summary: A novel phospho-silicon co-flame retardant material composed of montmorillonite modified black phosphorus nanosheets (MMT-BP) is synthesized. MMT-BP nanosheets improve the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and fire safety of waterborne polyurethane (WPU). The superior flame-retardancy observed in the WPU nanocomposites containing 0.4 wt% MMT-BP is attributed to the formation of an Si-O-P bond between BP and MMT during passivation and the enhanced catalytic carbonization of BP in the condensed phase.

Waterborne polyurethane composites flame retardancy based on the bi-DOPO derivatives and dangling poly(dimethylsiloxane) chains

Xuyang Liang et al.

Summary: The composites phosphorus-silicon flame retardant was used to modify waterborne poly-urethane (WPU) and characterized. The flame retardancy, residual carbon morphology, and graphitization of the modified WPU films were evaluated. The results showed that the flame-retardant films had low heat release rate and total heat release values, as well as increased limiting oxygen index and improved strength and shield properties.

Tough, Photoluminescent, Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethane Elastomers Resulting from Synergistic Action of Multiple Dynamic Bonds

Xueling Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) elastomers with high strength, high toughness, and high self-healing rate were prepared using Schiff bases containing disulfide and acylhydrazone bonds as chain extenders. The introduction of acylhydrazone crosslinks increased thermal stability and mechanical properties of the elastomer, while also reducing the activation energy of polymer chain movement. WPU-PD exhibited excellent mechanical properties and a high self-healing efficiency, and its photoluminescence property allowed tracking of the self-healing process. This self-healing polyurethane has promising applications in various fields.

Moses M. Solomon et al.

Summary: Benzimidazole derivatives are promising corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas applications due to their high efficiency and good environmental profile. 2-(chloromethyl)benzimidazole (CMB) has been identified as a low-toxic sweet corrosion inhibitor with good performance in CO2-saturated NaCl solution. The interaction between CMB and steel is facilitated by free electrons around N heteroatoms and C = C bonds, leading to improved surface degradation of the steel during sweet corrosion.
