Bio-based coating resins derived from cardanol using carbocationic polymerization and their evaluation as one-component alkyd-type coatings

Deep J. Kalita et al.

Summary: A novel cardanol-based polymer was synthesized using carbocationic polymerization, and it was found that these polymers have better performance than commercial reference alkyds during the oxidative curing process, making them suitable for surface coatings.

Thermal Analysis of Plastics Used in the Food Industry

Malgorzata Majder-Lopatka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermo-oxidation process of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based plastics. The stability of C-H bonds and intramolecular hydrogen transfer play important roles in the degradation rate and onset temperature of the plastics. The study also reveals that PS-based plastics generate the least amount of heat during a fire.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.

A more efficient synthesis and properties of saturated and unsaturated starch esters

Laura Boetje et al.

Summary: This study presents a series of starch esters synthesized through transesterification reactions catalyzed by TBD in DMSO. By purging the reaction flask with nitrogen, the degree of substitution was increased. Long-chain fatty acids exhibited the most significant increase in DS, while starch esters from unsaturated fatty acids showed lower Tg and higher hydrophobicity compared to pristine starch.

Poly (vinyl ethers) based on the biomass-derived compound, eugenol, and their one-component, ambient-cured surface coatings

Deep J. Kalita et al.

Summary: A novel monomer, 2-eugenoloxy ethyl vinyl ether (EEVE), was synthesized from a renewable bio-based compound, eugenol. The resulting EEVE-based polymers showed improved properties compared to conventional air-drying alkyd resins, such as higher chemical resistance, hardness, glass transition temperature, and Young's modulus. The incorporation of cyclohexyl vinyl ether (CHVE) further enhanced the performance of the crosslinked networks.

Influence of crosslinking density on the mechanical and thermal properties of plant oil-based epoxy resin

Jinrui Huang et al.

Summary: The increase in crosslinking density linearly enhances the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and glass transition temperature of epoxy resins, while nonlinearly decreasing the elongation at break and tensile toughness.
