Supramolecular Azopolymers for Dynamic Surface Microstructures Using Digital Polarization Optics

Jonas Strobelt et al.

Summary: Thin film supramolecular azopolymers are capable of generating dynamic surface microstructures through the use of structured polarized light and a spatial light modulator. This programmable system allows for independent control of multiple regions on the film surface, enabling the generation of surface waves with unique characteristics. The system's photomechanical response, combined with its ease of fabrication from commercially available components, makes it suitable for a range of applications including dynamic diffractive optics and nanoparticle manipulation.

Shapeshifting Diffractive Optical Devices

Stefano L. Oscurato et al.

Summary: This study overcomes the fundamental limitation of static optical devices by introducing shapeshifting diffractive optical elements written on erasable photoresponsive material to provide real-time changes in optical functionalities. A new lithographic configuration is developed for writing/erasing cycles of aligned optical elements in the light path, showing the realization of complex diffractive gratings and a reconfigurable diffractive lens in the light path. The approach opens new possibilities for on-demand reconfiguration in emerging areas of photonics.

Local Direction of Optomechanical Stress in Azobenzene Containing Polymers During Surface Relief Grating Formation

Sarah Loebner et al.

Summary: This study reveals the relationship between photoinduced deformation of azobenzene containing polymers and the direction of optomechanical stresses generated during irradiation with interference patterns. Experimentally observed shapes are accurately reproduced with modeling using visco-plastic properties in finite element software. The orientation approach can predict local variations of light-induced stress in different interference patterns, providing a self-sufficient and convincing mechanism for describing photoinduced deformation in azopolymer films.

Optical microstructure fabrication using structured polarized illumination

Jonas Strobelt et al.

Summary: A versatile system for fabricating surface microstructures is demonstrated by combining the photomechanical response of supramolecular azopolymers with structured polarized illumination. Surface relief structures with various periods and amplitudes can be fabricated with a single exposure, and different surface profiles can be generated by programming the spatial light modulator. The combination of multiple surface microstructures into macroscopic areas is also achieved, and the growth and observation of the structures can be done in real time without post-exposure processing.

Varifocal diffractive lenses for multi-depth microscope imaging

Francesco Reda et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the realization of a fully reconfigurable flat varifocal diffractive lens, which can be directly manufactured, erased, and reshaped on the surface of an azopolymer film. Integrating the lens into the optical system allows for multi-depth object imaging. This approach provides an effective choice for integrating or substituting modern optical systems for advanced functionalities.

Accurate Morphology-Related Diffraction Behavior of Light-Induced Surface Relief Gratings on Azopolymers

Francesco Reda et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the temporal evolution of surface relief gratings (SRGs) fabricated using interference lithography, and proposes a simple yet detailed diffraction model to accurately describe the diffraction behavior of SRGs. By conducting Fourier analysis of surface profiles, a reliable surface structuration dynamics is empirically extracted, providing insights for improving the performance and application of SRGs.

Photo-Transformable Gratings for Augmented Reality

Yongjun Lim et al.

Summary: The integration of multiple diffractive optical elements using holographic inscription offers a cost-effective and efficient way to develop large-area DOEs for augmented reality technologies. However, erasing and re-inscribing the DOEs can lead to pattern integrity and throughput issues in multiscale integration. The proposal to transform already formed DOEs without erasing provides a solution for creating centimeter-scale mosaic DOEs within an hour, enabling advanced AR demonstrations.

Summary: This study fully investigates the use of light-induced surface relief on azopolymers to realize large-scale multiplexed gratings with optimized diffraction performances, both theoretically and experimentally. The reconfigurable diffraction gratings designed and fabricated in a switchable two-beam interference setup can diffract polychromatic light in the same direction with controllable relative color intensities, with potential applications in emerging display areas.
