Environmental Stress Cracking of High-Density Polyethylene Applying Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics

Maximilian Thuy et al.

Summary: The crack propagation rate of environmental stress cracking on high-density polyethylene was investigated under static loading conditions. Different environmental liquids were tested, including water, aqueous solution, solvents, and detergents. The study revealed that crack growth in surface-active media is influenced by the plasticization and blunting effects caused by solvents. The crack propagation rate followed the Paris-Erdogan law, and scanning electron micrographs showed distinct creep behavior of fibrils. The limitations of linear elastic fracture mechanisms for visco-elastic polymers exposed to environmental liquids were also discussed.

Experimental investigation on laser cutting of PMMA sheets: Effects of process factors on kerf characteristics

Ahmed B. Khoshaim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of continuous CO2 laser cutting of PMMA and established an experimental plan and regression models to correlate different process responses with process factors. It was found that the cut surface can be classified into different zones, and recommendations were made to optimize the cutting parameters for minimizing heat affected zone and surface roughness.
