A facile strategy to construct multifunctional microencapsulated urea ammonium polyphosphate for epoxy resins towards satisfied fire safety, thermal stability and compatibility

Liang Yi et al.

Summary: Polypyrrole-coated urea ammonium polyphosphate (PPy-UAPP) was used to enhance the fire safety and thermal stability of epoxy resin (EP). EP with 10 wt% PPy-UAPP achieved a UL94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 32.3%, while EP with 10 wt% ammonium polyphosphate (APP) only had an LOI of 28.5%. The inclusion of PPy-UAPP reduced the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and peak smoke production rate (PSPR) of EP by 12.3% and 21.4% respectively compared to EP with 10 wt% APP. The improved fire safety of EP/PPy-UAPP can be attributed to the reduction of hazardous gases and the generation of more incombustible gases, while the good compatibility between EP matrix and PPy-UAPP provided a superior balance between fire safety and mechanical properties.
