Aging of UV curable PDMS developed for large-scale, high viscosity stereolithography

Hongtao Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of photosensitive platinum catalysts for UV-activated hydrosilylation of PDMS, which enables the additive manufacturing of PDMS objects. The aging behavior of Pt-catalyzed, UV-curable PDMS samples is studied, including their mechanical behavior under thermal and UV-accelerated aging conditions. The results show that the Pt-catalyzed, UV-curable PDMS undergoes aging, resulting in increased stiffness and decreased elongation, likely due to the formation of additional crosslinks. The PDMS formulation exhibits greater mechanical strength and significantly less reduction in strength with aging compared to commonly used thiol-ene PDMS.

Additive Manufacturing for Bioinspired Structures: Experimental Study to Improve the Multimaterial Adhesion Between Soft and Stiff Materials

Gianni Stano et al.

Summary: The fabrication of bioinspired structures using material extrusion additive manufacturing technology has gained popularity in soft robotics. Stiff-soft bioinspired structures activated by shape memory alloy actuators have been successfully manufactured and tested. The gyroid infill was found to produce better mechanical properties compared to the widely studied lines infill. An experimental study was conducted to improve the adhesion at the interface between stiff and soft materials using an inexpensive method. By optimizing interface geometry, mesh overlapping, and annealing post-treatment, a significant improvement in the adhesion strength was achieved. A bioinspired robotic finger was successfully fabricated and tested, demonstrating the potential of the proposed additive manufacturing approach in realizing bioinspired systems.

Embedded 3D Printing of PDMS-Based Microfluidic Chips for Biomedical Applications

Weijian Hua et al.

Summary: This study investigates a fumed silica-PDMS suspension for embedded 3D printing (e-3DP) matrix bath, enabling the low-cost extrusion 3D printing of microfluidic chips with complex embedded channels. The addition of fumed silica particles effectively changes PDMS from a viscous solution to a yield-stress suspension suitable for e-3DP. The mechanical properties of the crosslinked fumed silica-PDMS are enhanced with an increased concentration of fumed silica. Although transparency is reduced, the printed microfluidic chips remain acceptable. The proposed fumed silica-PDMS suspension-enabled e-3DP method is successfully validated through the printing of two representative microfluidic chips for biomedical applications.
