Advancements in MXene-polymer composites for high-performance supercapacitor applications

Muhammad Amirul Aizat Mohd Abdah et al.

Summary: State-of-the-art supercapacitors based on MXene and polymer composites offer an innovative approach to enhance electrochemical performance. MXene, a 2D material, exhibits exceptional electrochemical attributes and metallic conductivity. However, the restacking nature of MXene layers limits electrolyte penetration and ion adsorption/desorption. This review discusses the harnessing techniques and properties of MXene and polymer-based composites, as well as their applications in supercapacitors.

Metal-Induced Crystallization in Metal Oxides

Clement Sanchez et al.

Summary: The properties of a material depend on its crystalline state, with next generation solid-state technologies aiming to integrate crystalline oxides into composite materials using low temperature crystallization techniques such as metal-induced crystallization (MIC). MIC involves introducing small amounts of a cation to reduce crystallization temperature in metal oxides, providing a means to tune purity and crystalline phase ratios. MIC is a cost-effective and efficient method for achieving crystallization in solid state materials.

Zhou-Rui Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, lignin/ polypyrrole composite electrode films with microporous and mesoporous structures were successfully designed by electrostatic spinning, carbonization, and in situ polymerization methods. The removal of functional groups during carbonization increased the specific surface area of the composite films. Additionally, a compact conductive network structure was constructed, which improved the conductivity and electron transfer. The synthesized lignin carbon fibers/PPy anode materials exhibited good electrochemical performance in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte.

Summary: The use of nonrenewable fossil fuels poses a serious threat to human life, making it crucial to develop environmentally friendly and low-cost renewable energy storage solutions. Supercapacitors, with their higher power density and outstanding cyclic stability, are considered a future energy device. However, they have a lower energy density compared to regular batteries. The electrochemical characteristics of supercapacitors are strongly influenced by the electrode materials, particularly metal oxides. The discovery of nanostructured electrode materials remains a major focus of supercapacitor research.

Advanced materials and technologies for supercapacitors used in energy conversion and storage: a review

M. I. A. Abdel Maksoud et al.

Summary: Supercapacitors are increasingly utilized in sustainable nanotechnologies for energy conversion and storage. Various materials, such as spinel ferrites, perovskite oxides, transition metals sulfides, carbon materials, and conducting polymers, are compared for supercapacitor fabrication. Transition metal sulfides, like ZnCo2S4, exhibit higher specific capacitance compared to transition metal oxides, due to low charge-transfer resistance and high ion diffusion rate. Composites of magnetic oxides or transition metal sulfides with conducting polymers or carbon materials show the highest capacitance activity and cyclic stability, attributed to oxygen and sulfur active sites that facilitate electrolyte penetration and create new active sites.
