A simple, quick, and cost-effective strategy to fabricate polycaprolactone/silk fibroin nanofiber yarns for biotextile-based tissue scaffold application

Ye Qi et al.

Summary: The study reports on a simple, quick, and cost-effective method to produce nanofiber-constructed yarns (NYs) using a combination of electrospinning, hand winding, and stretching post-treatment. The NYs demonstrated improved surface hydrophilicity and wettability with increasing silk fibroin (SF) content. Cells were able to sense and respond to the nanofibrous morphology and orientation of the NYs and SF promoted cell growth and proliferation. This research provides a simple and feasible method for fabricating PCL/SF NYs and NY-based biotextiles with great potential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.

Nitric Oxide-Releasing Tryptophan-Based Poly(ester urea)s Electrospun Composite Nanofiber Mats with Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities for Infected Wound Healing

Mengna Li et al.

Summary: In this study, tryptophan-based poly(ester urea) materials were developed for the preparation of composite mats with good biodegradation and biocompatibility. The mats were grafted with a nitric oxide donor and exhibited a prolonged NO release profile, effectively killing bacteria and disrupting biofilms. Furthermore, the mats promoted cell growth, regulated inflammatory factors, and accelerated wound healing.

Eco-Friendly Hybrid PLLA/Chitosan/Trichoderma asperellum Nanomaterials as Biocontrol Dressings against Esca Disease in Grapevines

Mariya Spasova et al.

Summary: Fungi are the main components of plant pathogens, while Trichoderma spp. are beneficial microorganisms that can control the growth of many plant pathogens. In this study, eco-friendly hybrid nanomaterials were created by embedding Trichoderma asperellum spores in a film formed on electrospun PLLA fibers. These nanomaterials showed potential for inhibiting the growth of fungal pathogens and could serve as bioactive dressings for protecting grapevines against esca disease.

Plant Extracts Rich in Polyphenols as Potent Modulators in the Growth of Probiotic and Pathogenic Intestinal Microorganisms

Milica Milutinovic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of polyphenol-rich extracts from four medicinal herbs on the growth of probiotic and pathogenic microbes. The results demonstrated that certain extracts, particularly yarrow extract, stimulated the growth of probiotic yeast significantly. This suggests that plant polyphenol-rich extracts may play a role in modulating the balance of intestinal microbiota and potentially benefit conditions associated with fungal dysbiosis.
