Polyurethane foams from vegetable oil-based polyols: a review

Dhiraj S. Kaikade et al.

Summary: Polyurethane is a versatile material commonly used for thermal insulation. The synthesis of polyurethane is currently reliant on the petrochemical industry, but there is potential to use vegetable oil as an alternative raw material. This review explores the extraction of polyol from vegetable oil for polyurethane foam synthesis.

Oxyalkylation of Lignoboost™ Kraft Lignin with Propylene Carbonate: Design of Experiments towards Synthesis Optimization

Fernanda Rosa Vieira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of oxyalkylation operating conditions on the quality of lignin-based polyol and utilizes full factorial modeling and response surface methodology to analyze the impact of process variables. The results indicate that reaction time significantly affects the hydroxyl number, while the amount of propylene carbonate influences the viscosity. RSM optimization reduces propylene carbonate usage and increases lignin content.

Polyurethane Adhesives Based on Oxyalkylated Kraft Lignin

Fernanda Rosa Vieira et al.

Summary: Lignin-based polyol was prepared from eucalyptus kraft lignin using propylene carbonate. The obtained polyol was used in the synthesis of polyurethane adhesives, and their performance was evaluated. The lignin-based PU adhesive showed better chemical resistance and adhesion efficiency compared to a commercial PU adhesive. Despite some drawbacks in thermal stability and gelation time, lignin-based PU adhesives have the potential to replace petroleum-derived adhesives in the furniture industry.

Effect of bio-based polyols and chain extender on the microphase separation structure, mechanical properties and morphology of rigid polyurethane foams

Kaisen Jiang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microphase separation behavior and thermodynamic properties of rigid polyurethane foams prepared from bio-based polyols. The addition of bio-based polyols increased the hydrogen bond content and suppressed the microphase separation tendency. With the addition of a chain extender, the foam showed increased compressive strength and proportion of ordered hydrogen bonds, indicating an increase in the degree of microphase separation.

Dispersion Methodology for Technical Lignin into Polyester Polyol for High-Performance Polyurethane Insulation Foam

Hima Haridevan et al.

Summary: This study discusses the enhanced dispersion of kraft lignin (KL) in a glycerol-substituted aromatic polyester polyol blend, with up to 75 wt% KL incorporated. The KL incorporation in polyol resulted in a remarkable reduction in thermal conductivity of the resultant RPUF, with minimal changes in density and compressive strength. Additionally, the presence of KL in the RPUF also led to a slight improvement in flame retardance performance.

Valorization of Lignin Side-Streams into Polyols and Rigid Polyurethane Foams-A Contribution to the Pulp and Paper Industry Biorefinery

Joao A. Pinto et al.

Summary: The valorization of industrial low-value side-streams, such as lignin, for the production of biobased polyols shows promise in enhancing the circular economy. The use of lignin-based polyols at 100% content in the synthesis of rigid polyurethane (RPU) foams, particularly when depolymerized lignins are used, demonstrates viability and improved fire retardancy. This approach contributes to establishing a more integrated pulp and paper biorefinery concept.
