Different encoding of reward location in dorsal and intermediate hippocampus

Przemyslaw Jarzebowski et al.

Summary: Hippocampal place cells in the brain encode spatial relations and reward locations. Dorsal CA1 (dCA1) cells accumulate at reward, while intermediate CA1 (iCA1) cells may have a different role in spatial navigation. Little is known about the involvement of the intermediate-to-ventral hippocampus in reward-directed navigation. This study used calcium imaging to track the activity of CA1 cells in mice as they learned different reward locations. The results suggest that dCA1 encodes reward proximity through changing populations of cells, while iCA1 provides a reward-predictive code through a dedicated subpopulation. Both codes persist over time and assist goal-directed navigation.

Neurophysiology of Remembering

Gyorgy Buzsaki et al.

Summary: This article emphasizes the importance of memory in defining one's sense of identity and explores different research methods and limitations in studying memory in humans and other animals. It proposes a new brain-based understanding of declarative memory, focusing on hippocampal physiology. The article also discusses the common physiological mechanisms of navigation in real and mental spacetime and presents the distinguishing features of different types of memory. Finally, it hypothesizes that neuronal networks have a reservoir of neural trajectories and the challenge for the brain is to select and match preexisting neuronal trajectories with events in the world.

A Direct Comparison of Theta Power and Frequency to Speed and Acceleration

Jack P. Kennedy et al.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between theta rhythm and voluntary movement in hippocampal neurophysiology research, highlighting the impact of running speed on theta frequency and power compared to acceleration. The results suggest that speed plays a more significant role in influencing theta frequency, contradicting previous findings that acceleration is the dominant factor. Caution is advised in interpreting absolute claims about hippocampal physiology from single behavioral repertoires, emphasizing the need to consider multiple sensory inputs in navigation tasks.

Behaviourally modulated hippocampal theta oscillations in the ferret persist during both locomotion and immobility

Soraya L. S. Dunn et al.

Summary: Theta oscillations are a characteristic feature of hippocampal activity in mammals, playing a crucial role in memory and spatial navigation models. However, there are differences in the presence and properties of theta among different species. By recording hippocampal local field potentials in rats and ferrets, this study found that theta oscillations occur during locomotion in both species. However, during periods of immobility, theta oscillations persist in ferrets while rats switch to large irregular activity.

Prioritized experience replays on a hippocampal predictive map for learning

Hideyoshi Igata et al.

Summary: During the learning process, hippocampal cell ensembles exhibit dynamic changes in replay patterns, incorporating salient locations and reward-related contexts. The directionality of replays gradually varies, including the replay of optimized paths that have never been exploited by the animals, indicating a prioritized replay of significant experiences.

The Continuity of Context: A Role for the Hippocampus

Andrew P. Maurer et al.

Summary: The passage discusses the importance of tracking moment-to-moment change in input and detecting change sufficient to require altering behavior for survival. It focuses on how the brain evaluates change over time, with a special emphasis on the role of the hippocampus in tracking context and updating an organism's sense of its surroundings. The role of place cells in tracking contextual continuities and discontinuities is highlighted, showcasing the critical role of the hippocampus in spatial cognition and episodic memory.

Frequency of theta rhythm is controlled by acceleration, but not speed, in running rats

Emilio Kropff et al.

Summary: The study found that theta rhythm frequency is linearly related to positive acceleration but not to negative acceleration or speed, making it unsuitable for computing displacement or other kinematic variables. Temporally precise variations in theta frequency may serve as a mechanism for accelerating entorhinal-hippocampal computations during movement acceleration.

Neuronal sequences during theta rely on behavior-dependent spatial maps

Eloy Parra-Barrero et al.

Summary: The study examines the relationships between theta phase, represented position, and true location in navigation through space in mammalian brains. Existing concepts of 'spatial' or 'temporal' theta sweeps are found to be inadequate in explaining how relevant variables change with running speed. A new concept of 'behavior-dependent' sweeps is introduced, where theta sweep length and place field properties vary based on running speed characteristics at different locations in the environment, providing essential structured heterogeneity for understanding the hippocampal code.

Bidirectional synaptic plasticity rapidly modifies hippocampal representations

Aaron D. Milstein et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dendritic calcium spikes in the hippocampus play a role in enabling the brain to update its map of the world and make better spatial decisions. Through experiments and computational modeling, researchers found that behavioral timescale synaptic plasticity (BTSP) can reshape place fields in the brain by bidirectional synaptic weight changes. The experiments suggest that this mechanism allows neurons to associate event sequences that unfold over a longer timescale more relevant to day-to-day life experiences.

Clone-structured graph representations enable flexible learning and vicarious evaluation of cognitive maps

Dileep George et al.

Summary: Higher-order sequence learning using a structured graph representation - clone-structured cognitive graphs (CSCG) - can explain how the hippocampus learns cognitive maps. CSCG provides novel explanations for transferable schemas and transitive inference in the hippocampus, and for how place cells, splitter cells, lap-cells and a variety of phenomena emerge from the same set of fundamental principles.

Nonlocal spatiotemporal representation in the hippocampus of freely flying bats

Nicholas M. Dotson et al.

Summary: The study finds that neural activity in the hippocampus of bats primarily encodes spatial information beyond the present moment, extending up to meters away from the bat's current position. This spatiotemporal representation extends both backward and forward in time, with emphasis on future locations, and is observed during both random exploration and goal-directed navigation.

Hippocampal place cell sequences differ during correct and error trials in a spatial memory task

Chenguang Zheng et al.

Summary: In a spatial memory task, place cell sequences during correct trials are longer, more temporally compressed, and develop a bias to replay paths to a goal location during rest periods, while this is not observed during error trials. The coordination of place cell sequences by theta rhythms and sharp wave-ripples may play a crucial role in the successful performance of the task.
