Nanobody-driven signaling reveals the core receptor complex in root nodule symbiosis

Henriette Rubsam et al.

Summary: This study developed a synthetic approach using nanobodies to understand and activate multicomponent receptor complexes, successfully manipulating receptors involved in plant symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The authors found that the Lotus japonicus Nod factor receptors NFR1 and NFR5 form the core receptor complex for initiating root nodule organogenesis and controlling infection. They also discovered that organogenesis signaling is mediated by intracellular kinase domains, while infection requires functional ectodomains. Additionally, evolutionarily distant barley receptors were identified, which could potentially enable nitrogen-fixation engineering in cereals.

Pseudogenization of the rhizobium-responsive EXOPOLYSACCHARIDE RECEPTOR in Parasponia is a rare event in nodulating plants

Simon Dupin et al.

Summary: The nitrogen-fixing nodulation trait has a single evolutionary origin across different plant lineages, with EPR3 playing a crucial role in controlling rhizobium infection in legumes. However, in the non-legume Parasponia lineage, EPR has been pseudogenized, suggesting a unique evolutionary path and the possibility of a microsymbiont switch from Frankia to rhizobium.

Fungi hijack a ubiquitous plant apoplastic endoglucanase to release a ROS scavenging β-glucan decasaccharide to subvert immune responses

Balakumaran Chandrasekar et al.

Summary: Plant pathogenic and beneficial fungi have evolved strategies to resist plant immune response. The different layers of fungal cell wall and extracellular polysaccharide matrix have different functions. A low molecular weight β-glucan decasaccharide released by plant hydrolase plays an important role in fungal adaption and suppression of plant immunity.

Kinetic proofreading of lipochitooligosaccharides determines signal activation of symbiotic plant receptors

Kira Gysel et al.

Summary: Plants and animals utilize cell surface receptors to sense and interpret environmental signals. A specific class of LCO receptors in legumes has been identified to use kinetic proofreading to activate the receptor and control signaling specificity. This finding highlights the potential for receptor engineering to capture benefits in plant-microbe interactions.

Genetics of nodulation in Aeschynomene evenia uncovers mechanisms of the rhizobium-legume symbiosis

Johan Quilbe et al.

Summary: Aeschynomene spp. utilize a unique symbiotic process for nitrogen-fixing nodulation, independent of traditional Nod factors and infection threads. Genetic studies in A. evenia reveal specific mechanisms in early and late nodulation steps, with key receptor-like kinase and symbiotic signaling genes necessary for triggering root and stem nodulation. This research highlights the importance of A. evenia as a model for understanding rhizobium-legume symbiosis.

Nitrate restricts nodule organogenesis through inhibition of cytokinin biosynthesis in Lotus japonicus

Jieshun Lin et al.

Summary: Legumes balance nitrate signaling and symbiotic nitrogen fixation through cytokinin biosynthesis, with low nitrate conditions promoting cytokinin induction and high nitrate inhibiting it. This differential response is further seen in mutants, which show hypersensitivity to nitrate inhibition but can be rescued by cytokinin application. Nitrate's inhibitory effect on symbiosis occurs in a Nlp1 and Nlp4 dependent manner, contrasting with its positive influence on non-legumes.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Lipid exchanges drove the evolution of mutualism during plant terrestrialization

Melanie K. Rich et al.

Summary: Symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi benefits plant nutrition and elicits a conserved transcriptomic response among land plants, including activation of lipid metabolism. Transfer of lipids from liverwort to AMF is regulated by the transcription factor WRINKLED, and the formation of arbuscules is essential for mutualism. The symbiotic transfer of lipids is orthologous across land plants, indicating the presence of mutualism with AMF in the most recent ancestor of land plants 450 million years ago.
