Is hamstrings-to-quadriceps torque ratio useful for predicting anterior cruciate ligament and hamstring injuries? A systematic and critical review

Eleftherios Kellis et al.

Summary: background: The hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) torque ratio has been considered as an important index of muscle strength imbalance around the knee joint. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the value of H:Q ratio as an independent risk factor for hamstring and ACL injuries. The results showed limited evidence that H:Q strength ratio is an independent risk factor for these injuries. Methodological limitations and limited evidence for certain ratio types might have influenced these findings.

Relationship between maximal strength and hamstring-to-quadriceps ratios in balanced and unbalanced legs in futsal athletes

Raphael Pereira Fortes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of knee flexor and extensor muscles on hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratio. The researchers studied professional futsal players and found correlations between knee flexor and extensor peak torque and H:Q ratios. However, there were differences between balanced and unbalanced knee flexor and extensor muscles.

Injury-Inciting Activities in Male and Female Football Players: A Systematic Review

Francesco Aiello et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the literature on the activities performed around the time of injury in football (soccer). The results need to be interpreted carefully due to the risk of bias in the included studies. Future research should use consistent methods to record and classify injuries and activities leading up to and performed at the time of injury.

Hamstring injury patterns in professional male football (soccer): a systematic video analysis of 52 cas

Thomas Gronwald et al.

Summary: The study using systematic video analysis in professional male football revealed that sprinting and stretching are the main causes of acute hamstring injuries, with the biceps femoris being the most affected muscle. The research suggests that rapid movements with high eccentric demands of the posterior thigh are likely the main mechanism leading to hamstring injuries.

The Hamstring and ACL Injury Incidence during a Season Is Not Directly Related to Preseason Knee Strength Ratios in Elite Male Soccer Players

Jana Izovska et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between preseason strength differences and the risk of hamstring strain injury (HSI) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in professional soccer players. The results showed that low-angular velocity preseason testing was not associated with the occurrence of HSI or ACL injury during the season.

Systematic Video Analysis of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Professional Female Soccer Players

Simona Lucarno et al.

Summary: Female soccer players are at high risk for ACL injuries, mostly occurring in situations like pressing and tackling, regaining balance after kicking, and being tackled. Biomechanical analysis revealed multiplanar mechanisms with frequent knee valgus loading. The majority of injuries happened in the first half of matches, specifically within the first 30 minutes.

Neuromuscular fatigue and recovery after strenuous exercise depends on skeletal muscle size and stem cell characteristics

Philipp Baumert et al.

Summary: The study reveals that repeated maximal sprints can lead to neuromuscular fatigue in hamstring muscles, causing both immediate strength loss linked to central and peripheral fatigue and prolonged strength loss associated with muscle damage indicators. The findings suggest that kinematic changes after sprinting may protect fatigued hamstrings, while factors like muscle cross-sectional area and myoblast:fibroblast ratio could aid in muscle recovery within 48 hours post-sprinting.

Effect of Muscle-Specific Fatigue on the Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury in Females

Jeheon Moon et al.

Summary: The study found that after quadriceps fatigue, the extension and adduction moments of the knee joint, as well as the mean anterior bundle of ACL force, decreased significantly; while after hamstring fatigue, the knee flexion angle, knee valgus angle, and shear force decreased significantly. Muscle-specific fatigue may lead to ACL injury, but the hamstring muscle may not have a mechanism to prevent ACL injury.
