Internet addiction is associated with psychological distress in highly schizotypal students

Feten Fekih-Romdhane et al.

Summary: There is evidence of an association between technology addictions and psychotic symptoms, psychoticism, psychotic-like experiences, and schizotypy among non-clinical young adults. High schizotypal individuals showed higher scores in smartphone, internet, and Facebook addictions compared to low schizotypal individuals. Internet addiction predicted psychological distress in the high schizotypy group and explained additional variation in depression, anxiety, and stress levels.

A longitudinal study of the effects of problematic smartphone use on social functioning among people with schizophrenia: Mediating roles for sleep quality and self-stigma

Kun-Chia Chang et al.

Summary: This study used a longitudinal design to examine the relationships between problematic smartphone use, sleep quality, self-stigma, and social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. The results showed that problematic smartphone use, poor sleep quality, and self-stigma were significant predictors of social functioning. Furthermore, sleep quality and self-stigma mediated the associations between problematic smartphone use and social functioning. Interventions targeting problematic smartphone use, improving sleep quality, and addressing self-stigma may help improve social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia.

An exploration of patient experience of sleep, physical activity, and exercise in early psychosis

Chris Griffiths et al.

Summary: Compared to the general population, individuals with psychosis face more challenges in terms of physical fitness and sleep. In this study, early intervention psychosis service patients were found to experience specific issues and barriers when it comes to sleep and physical activity. However, they used strategies such as medication, social support, and practical approaches to overcome these challenges. Healthy and effective sleep and physical activity are crucial for the wellbeing and mental and physical health of psychosis patients.

Summary: This study examined the associations between psychotic experiences (PEs) in adolescents and various factors such as psychopathology, adversity, and lifestyle. It found that there were potential risk factors for PEs from multiple domains, with parental support playing a mediating role in the relationship between adversity and PEs. These findings suggest that interventions targeting family relationships could help reduce the risk of PEs in at-risk adolescents.

Summary: The study developed and evaluated a digital intervention for problematic smartphone use in student population, finding that the intervention led to a reduction in self-reported problematic smartphone use and improvements in well-being, mindfulness, and sleep, but not a decrease in screen time. The findings suggest that a light-touch, smartphone-delivered package is an acceptable and effective intervention for students looking to better manage their problematic smartphone use.
