Approaches on Ferrofluid Synthesis and Applications: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Oscar Oehlsen et al.

Summary: Ferrofluids are colloidal suspensions of iron oxide nanoparticles within liquids that have strong magnetic properties. This review discusses the synthesis methods of nanoparticles, surfactants, and carrier liquids for ferrofluid production, as well as the applications of ferrofluids in medicine, water treatment, and mechanical engineering. Coprecipitation and thermal decomposition are the main methods used for synthesizing iron oxide nanoparticles. The selection of surfactants and carrier liquids depends on the desired stability and compatibility of the ferrofluid. Ferrofluids have a wide range of applications, including biosensing, medical imaging, water treatment, energy harvesting, and vibration control.

Effect of an excess of surfactant on thermophoresis, mass diffusion and viscosity in an oily surfactant-stabilized ferrofluid

Viesturs Sints et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of an excess of surfactant on the thermophoresis of a sterically stabilized ferrofluid was investigated using forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) experiments. The experiments revealed a decrease in the thermally induced transport of magnetic nanoparticles with increasing temperature, as well as a reduction in the interaction between the carrier fluid and individual nanoparticles due to the addition of surfactant. No significant effect on the thermophoretic sign was observed at higher temperatures. The presence of small clusters/aggregates in the samples, which were hardly detectable by FRS relaxation, was confirmed by dynamic light scattering. These findings provide insights into the behavior of ferrofluids and the role of surfactants in thermophoresis.

Summary: This research focuses on the transient response of porosity-dependent viscoelastic functionally graded nanobeams subjected to dynamic loads and magnetic field. Nonlocal strain gradient theory and quasi 3D beam theory with Kelvin-Voigt visco constitutive model are employed. Parametric investigations show that the magnetic field and length scale parameter have significant effects on the amplitude, number of cycles, and damping speed of the system.

Large-Eddy Simulation of Airflow and Pollutant Dispersion in a Model Street Canyon Intersection of Dhaka City

Sheikh Hassan et al.

Summary: This work numerically studied the atmospheric flow and dispersion of traffic exhaust in a model street canyon intersection of a city. The study found that the pollutant concentration is high in the intersecting corner areas of the buildings. Additionally, an increased height of an upwind building leads to a high level of pollutant concentration at the leeward wall. The three-dimensional interconnection between the dominating canyon vortices and roof level flow was found to play a pivotal role in pollutant concentration level on the windward walls.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of temperature-dependent viscosity on natural convection flow. Numerical computations were conducted to obtain the velocity and viscosity profiles, as well as the heat transfer characteristics. The study found that increasing specific parameters decreases the local skin-friction coefficient, but has a greater influence on increasing the rate of heat transfer.

Summary: This study investigates the flow of water-based alumina and cupric oxide nanoparticles over a vertical plate and analyzes the impact of various factors on the flow properties. The results show that cupric oxide nanoparticles have better heat dissipation compared to alumina nanoparticles due to Lorentz force and higher thermal conductivity. Additionally, heat absorption and reactive species result in a slight decrease in the thermal and velocity fields of alumina nanoparticles.
