Water quality prediction model using Gaussian process regression based on deep learning for carbon neutrality in papermaking wastewater treatment system

Xin Wan et al.

Summary: Wastewater recycling is a crucial approach for achieving carbon neutrality in wastewater treatment plants, and high-precision online monitoring can enhance the stability of the system and facilitate wastewater recycling. In this study, a novel water quality prediction model called CSWLSTM-GPR was developed for monitoring papermaking wastewater treatment system. By integrating the spatial feature of CNN, the temporal feature of SWLSTM, and the probabilistic reliability of GPR, the model achieved accurate point and interval prediction. The results showed that CSWLSTM-GPR outperformed other models in terms of RMSE, MAE, R-2, and R, indicating its potential in online monitoring, wastewater recycling, and carbon neutrality in the papermaking industry.

Cost of raising discharge standards: A plant-by-plant assessment from wastewater sector in China

Hanshi Su et al.

Summary: China has implemented stricter effluent standards for wastewater treatment plants in order to protect the aquatic environment, but this has come at the cost of increased resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Our study finds that upgrading the standards to the Special Discharge Limit by 2030 would significantly increase electricity consumption and operating costs for the wastewater treatment sector, and also lead to substantial regional differences in terms of resource burden.
