The unique face of comorbid anxiety and depression: increased interoceptive fearfulness and reactivity

Maria Ironside et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether individuals with comorbid anxiety and depression show increased fearful reactivity to aversive interoceptive perturbation. The results showed that individuals with comorbid anxiety and depression experienced more fear and pain during breath-hold and cold-pressor challenges compared to those with depression alone. However, there were no differences between the two groups in neutral indices of heartbeat perception or neural indices of interoceptive attention.

Negative interpretation of ambiguous bodily symptoms among illness-anxious individuals: Exploring the role of developmental and maintenance constructs

Mina Elhamiasl et al.

Summary: This study aimed to address the statistical limitations of the direct measure of interpretation bias and used an indirect measure to assess biased interpretations of bodily symptoms. The findings showed that illness-anxious individuals made more negative interpretations of ambiguous health-threatening information and used less reappraisal to regulate their emotions. Anxiety sensitivity and reaction time to safe resolutions of ambiguous information were the best factors in differentiating illness-anxious individuals from non-anxious individuals.

Various neuromodulation methods including Deep Brain Stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle combined with psychopharmacotherapy of treatment-resistant depression-Case report

Joanna Rymaszewska et al.

Summary: This study explores a novel method for treating treatment-resistant depression, deep brain stimulation (DBS). The patient in this study received DBS treatment after other methods proved ineffective and experienced significant reduction in depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as improved social and occupational functioning after 20 months of active treatment.

Mitochondrial Impairment: A Common Motif in Neuropsychiatric Presentation? The Link to the Tryptophan-Kynurenine Metabolic System

Masaru Tanaka et al.

Summary: The cytoplasmic inheritance of human chloramphenicol resistance, which is mediated by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), has been discovered for almost half a century. Mutations in mtDNA have been found to cause severe inheritable metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies have shown that impaired mitochondrial functions and loss of mitochondrial stress resilience can influence animal behaviors. In addition, the activation of the tryptophan-kynurenine metabolic system, which is related to stress and inflammation, has been linked to the development of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The Paraventricular Nucleus of the Thalamus as an Integrating and Relay Node in the Brain Anxiety Network

Gilbert J. Kirouac

Summary: This review discusses the anatomical connections of the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) in the brain anxiety network and its role in promoting anxiety-related behaviors. Experimental findings show that the PVT receives signals from the cortex and hypothalamus, and modulates defensive responses by projecting to different brain regions. The PVT also plays a key role in social avoidance in rats.

Activation of septal OXTr neurons induces anxiety- but not depressive-like behaviors

Tuanjie Huang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the neuropeptide oxytocin increases anxiety by activating OXTr neurons in the septal region of the brain, which project inhibitory GABA inputs to the horizontal diagonal band of Broca (HDB). The activation of these pathways induces anxiety-like behaviors, shedding light on the complex role of oxytocin in modulating emotions.
